A former WWE star was told not to worry about being released.

On April 23rd, Cameron Grimes announced he’d been released by WWE. The star had been with the company since 2019, initially impressing in NXT before moving to SmackDown as part of the 2023 Draft.

However, the former TNA star struggled to gain significant momentum on the blue brand despite being popular with fans.

Grimes confirmed his release in an emotional video on social media, and given some new information, it’s perhaps no surprise the star was so heartbroken.

Speaking on Busted Open Radio, Grimes revealed he expressed concerns about being released only to be told he’d always have a job with the company. Despite these assurances, he was released just days later.

“I was told by a high executive last week on Friday that I would always have a job here (WWE). I would never have to worry about losing my job here, after expressing my concerns like that to him. And then five days later, they called me and told that I do lose the job. So I don’t know.” (H/t Wrestle Purists via X)

The star’s exit came after Jinder Mahal, Xia Li, Sanga, Veer, and Xyon Quinn, were all released on April 19th.

WWE Releases Down To “Budget Cuts”

Following the releases it was reported that WWE put them down to “budget cuts,” although it’s unclear whether this was passed on to talent.

While the majority of those released looked to the future, Sanga hit out at WWE for its handling and presentation of Indian talent. The star pointed out the apparent hypocrisy in the company looking to ensure it has a presence in India while undervaluing and simply not utilising Indian talent.
