Rey Mysterio Announced For Huge WWE Grudge Match

Rey Mysterio will make his in-ring return after taking time off due to a knee injury.

The last time that WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio had a match was at the WWE Crown Jewel PLE on November 4th. On that night, Rey lost the United States Title due to brass knuckles that were placed on the apron, which Paul then used to knock Rey out to win the title.

That controversial finish led to Santos Escobar turning on Rey and the Latino World Order group. It also led to Santino injuring Rey’s right knee in the story. That was because Rey needed knee surgery.

In late December, Rey Mysterio claimed it was a 6-8 week type injury, so some people thought Rey might come back for the Royal Rumble. That didn’t happen.

On last night’s WWE Smackdown from Memphis, Rey Mysterio saved his friends Dragon Lee & Carlito from an attack by the Legado Del Fantasma group led by Escobar. After the match, Rey challenged his long-time rival Escobar to a singles match on the March 22nd edition of Smackdown.

During the promo, Rey told Escobar: “I will slap that stupid, arrogant smile off your face.”

It has been rumored that Rey Mysterio and Santos Escobar will have a match at WrestleMania 40 as well, but WWE could change it up and go with a tag team match, or stick with the plan.

Rey Mysterio Re-Signed With WWE

After spending over 30 years in a wrestling ring, Rey Mysterio is near the end of his career, but he does plan to stick around WWE for a few more years. Mysterio, who will turn 50 in December of this year, signed a three-year contract extension with WWE in late 2023 that will see remain a part of the company while leading the LWO group more at least a few more years.
