Serious Doubts Raised Over Sami Zayn After Undisputed WWE Championship Win
A WWE Hall of Famer isn’t sure about Sami Zayn being the Undisputed WWE Champion.
Sami Zayn did the unthinkable at WWE Night of Champions when he pinned Cody Rhodes to become the WWE Champion for the first time in his 20+ year career.
In a triple threat match that also featured Gunther, Rhodes was trying to hit Zayn with the Cross Rhodes when Zayn found a way to counter, sat on top of Rhodes, and held onto his legs to keep him down for the three count.
On commentary, Michael Cole shouted that it was a “miracle” that Zayn became WWE Champion for the first time, even though it was Zayn’s 10th attempt at the coveted championship.
Following Zayn’s championship win seven days ago, there have been mixed reactions, with some people ecstatic for Zayn, while others are questioning the decision.
WWE Hall of Famer Eric Bischoff is among those who aren’t sure about Zayn holding the WWE Title, as he mentioned on his 83 Weeks podcast this week.
“I don’t know. I mean, honestly, that’s a head scratcher for me. It because he did just kind of come from out of nowhere with this.
It’s not like there’s any obvious stories, at least not to me. Now, maybe, you know, people that are listening to this and watch WWE more closely than I do can see a path, but sitting here right now, it feels to me like, well, I’d definitely be starting from square one because, like I said, there’s no origin story here. At least not an obvious one.”
“But that’s the first thing I would do is find out why. I’ve got to give him a reason why. Why did he end up in this position? There has to be a somewhat plausible, believable—to the extent that I lean into what you’re presenting me. I’m allowing myself to set my belief aside and I’m just going to get sucked into the story because that’s how stories should work.
I would figure out how to get to that because for me, this is just like dropped from the sky.”
Sami Zayn May Have A Short Title Reign
Regarding Sami Zayn’s WWE Title win, there is perhaps reason to worry that it will be a short title reign after WrestleVotes reported that “the marketing department has not received instructions to update the 2026 SummerSlam key art concepts to reflect Zayn being the champion.” It was also noted that many people in WWE were surprised by the result because management had kept it quiet.
In his first WWE Title defense, Sami Zayn will defend the gold against former champion Cody Rhodes on the July 6th edition of Monday Night Raw. Rhodes earned the title rematch by beating Jey Uso on the July 3rd edition of SmackDown in what was a very competitive match.
There have been rumors that WWE wants to do Cody Rhodes against CM Punk at SummerSlam on August 1/2 in Minneapolis, and Punk is set to return to WWE TV on Raw in Chicago on July 6th. If the plan is still for Rhodes to face Punk at SummerSlam, then it’s certainly possible Cody could become a 4-time WWE Champion as soon as Raw on July 6th in Chicago.
