WWE: Seth Rollins comments on a possible Shield reunion, wanting to headline WrestleMania and more

The Shield is one of the most dominant groups in the history of World Wrestling Entertainment. The group consisted of Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose. They debuted at Survivor Series 2012 during a WWE Title match where they helped CM Punk retain the championship when they attacked Ryback leading to Punk pinning Cena. The original plan was to align the group with Punk (according to him), but that didn’t happen and The Shield ended up being their own dominant faction. Their run really didn’t last that long since it started in November 2012 and it ended in June 2014 when Rollins turned heel against Reigns and Ambrose. We all knew a reunion would happen at some point. That reunion ended up being on the Raw brand last fall.

The problem with The Shield’s 2017 reunion is that Roman Reigns suffered from the mumps illness in October 2017, he missed about one month of action and then Ambrose hurt his arm in December 2017 leading to triceps surgery that has put Ambrose on the shelf for the last six months.

Rollins was recently interviewed by the Asbury Park Press. Here’s what he had to say about last year’s reunion and the potential of another return of The Shield.

“It really started off great, I thought. The reconciliation over the summer, myself and Ambrose winning tag team titles, and then bringing Roman into the fold was really well done and a lot of fun and exciting. And then, you know, the mumps happened, and there’s nothing you can really do about that, so that threw a real wrench into the plans. And Ambrose got hurt, so what can you do? That’s part of the business, that’s part of the game.”

“One thing that’s exciting about it is I think it leaves us a lot of room for future Shield reunions, so that’s cool to see. If we get an opportunity to do that at some point down the road that would be great. You know, we haven’t done it and thrown it away and wasted it. But yeah man, it’s just (that) stuff happens, you can’t predict those variables of people getting sick or injured.”

The mumps that Rollins mentioned was in reference to Reigns. As you may recall, the plan for TLC in October 2017 was The Shield vs. Kane, Braun Strowman, The Miz, Sheamus & Cesaro, but Reigns was unable to wrestle and was replaced by Kurt Angle two days before the show. That was also the match that set up the face turn for Strowman.

Rollins was also asked about the health of his buddy Ambrose.

“Dean’s good, man, he’s on the mend. He’s on his way back. Hopefully sometime before the end of the year we’ll see Dean Ambrose on WWE television again.”

I think Rollins is being a bit vague there. The expectation is Ambrose should be ready for SummerSlam next month, but obviously, Rollins doesn’t want to give that way. All we know for sure is Ambrose is getting closer.

As for his personal goals in WWE, Rollins is aiming high.

“My major drive is the same thing that’s driving (me) as it’s always been, and that’s just to be the best, you know? I want to main event every WrestleMania, I want to win the Universal Championship, I want to be the top guy, the guy that’s on all the billboards and drawing all the houses at the live events.”

“That’s where I want to be and that’s where I see myself, so I’m going to go out every single night, no matter what town or what show or who my opponent is, and have the absolute best performance of the night. Hopefully if I keep doing that for an extended period of time, I can get to where I want to be.”

I think Rollins should be main eventing shows, especially WrestleMania. Rollins is arguably the best wrestler in WWE on the main roster right now and I think all of us are ready for him to be back in the main event scene where he belongs.
