Why John Cena Really Aligned With The Rock And Attacked Cody Rhodes In WWE
John Cena finally opened up on why he brutally assaulted Cody Rhodes and aligned with The Rock.
John Cena kicked off his WWE retirement tour from the Royal Rumble last year. After he failed to win the Rumble, Cena went on to win the Elimination Chamber and earned the right to challenge Cody Rhodes for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 41.
At the Elimination Chamber PLE, Cody Rhodes confronted John Cena after his Chamber win. Cody also refused to align with The Rock. In a shocking turn of events, Cena turned heel by brutally attacking Rhodes and aligning with The Rock.
Although Cena’s entire heel run was polarizing, the moment at Elimination Chamber was so iconic. Meanwhile, Cena reflected on his heel turn that took place last year.
During his appearance at the SpaceCon event in San Antonio, John Cena was asked by a kid why he beat up Cody Rhodes after aligning with The Rock. Cena appreciated the question and explained his feud with Cody until SummerSlam:
That’s a great, great question. I was going through what you would call a midlife crisis. And I got a lot of respect for Cody Rhodes. The first time we fought, that was kind of like peak midlife crisis.”
And then when we had a rematch in SummerSlam, I think that midlife crisis was in the rearview mirror. So I may look back on the first one with a little bit of guilt, but I’d like to think we made up for it at SummerSlam. So thank you very much.” [H/T ITRWrestling]
John Cena on why his heel run didn’t work
In an interview earlier this year, John Cena addressed the criticisms regarding his heel run last year. Cena said that although the heel turn was a good idea, fans didn’t buy it and didn’t want to see it:
[It was] a good idea. Yeah. The audience sentiment was like, “One, I don’t buy it because like he’s kind of a good guy. And two, I don’t want to see it.” [It flamed out pretty quick] and pretty quick is good because everybody, everybody watching was like this is what’s happening in real time, and I could have been I could have been stubborn.”
Since his in-ring retirement, John Cena has made sporadic non-wrestling appearances in the WWE. Only time will tell when he will be seen again.
