Ex-Intercontinental Champion Tipped To End Cody Rhodes’ WWE Title Reign

Cody Rhodes’ Undisputed WWE Championship reign may be nearing its end.

The American Nightmare captured the title from Drew McIntyre ahead of WrestleMania 42. He has recently surpassed 100 days as WWE Champion.

Last Friday on SmackDown, Rhodes successfully defended his title against Gunther following controversial interference from Sami Zayn, who served as Special Guest Referee. Although the match was later restarted, Zayn again got involved, attacking The Ring General.

SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis later announced that both Gunther and The Last Real Good Guy will challenge The American Nightmare for the Undisputed WWE Title this Saturday at Night of Champions in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

WWE Analyst Sam Roberts Wants Gunther To Dethrone Cody Rhodes

On his Notsam Wrestling podcast, WWE analyst Sam Roberts addressed the highly anticipated Undisputed WWE Championship Triple Threat match.

While he acknowledged that Sami Zayn seems to have a notable chance of winning the title in Saudi Arabia, Roberts tipped Gunther to end Cody Rhodes’ third WWE Championship reign.

I very much, very much want Gunther to win the WWE Championship in this match. I want Gunther to win the WWE Championship at Night of Champions. We’ve got this Triple Threat. Gunther has now lost to Cody Rhodes twice.

You can put asterixis next to it all you want, but the fact is that he is not undefeated since beating John Cena. Gunther retired Goldberg, Bill Goldberg, then he retired John Cena, then he retired AJ Styles, and he beat Seth Rollins at WrestleMania. Asterixis nonetheless, but Cody beat him twice.

I think that Gunther going into this thing and coming out the WWE Champion is what it was all for. And Gunther now going to SummerSlam as WWE Champion opens the door to so much. I want Gunther to win the WWE Championship because it’s a Triple Threat. Gunther can pin Sami Zayn to win this title. [23:02 onwards]
