WWE Booking Of Gunther Called “Biggest Flop Of The Year”
Has Gunther lost his momentum in WWE?
In the past year, WWE booked the Austrian-born superstar as one of the most dominant forces in the company. Over the last 12 months, he has retired wrestling icons like Goldberg, John Cena, and AJ Styles, earning him the moniker “Career Killer.”
Fans had hoped that WWE would continue this momentum and feed him more legends to retire. However, for the past few months, his bookings have gone from fantastic to underwhelming.
In the latest episode of Friday Night SmackDown, the WWE Universe saw the 38-year-old star attack Nick Aldis in the middle of the ring after he refused to give him a world title shot.
Instead, the SmackDown GM booked The Ring General and Sami Zayn in a tag team match against Cody Rhodes and CM Punk at Saturday Night’s Main Event on July 18th at Madison Square Garden.
In a fit of rage, Gunther grabbed Aldis and choked him out, leaving him in a pile of sweat and drool. Clearly, WWE is building towards a Gunther vs. Nick Aldis match at SummerSlam.
WWE’s SummerSlam Plans For Gunther Criticized
Speaking on the recent episode of The Bryan & Vinny Show, renowned Wrestling Observer journalist Bryan Alvarez commented on WWE building towards Gunther vs. Nick Aldis at SummerSlam.
Alvarez stated that the match itself is entertaining. However, the former World Heavyweight Champion going up against the SmackDown general manager is subpar booking. He pointed out that WWE had the hottest storyline to run, but they failed to capitalize on it, calling Gunther’s recent booking “the biggest flop of the year.”

As of this writing, WWE hasn’t officially announced or confirmed the Gunther vs. Nick Aldis matchup at SummerSlam.
