WWE Star Teases Unusual WrestleMania 39 Main Event

An Intercontinental Title match in the main event of WrestleMania 39? One prominent WWE superstar thinks it should happen.

There’s a big match set to take place this coming Friday, March 17th on a St. Patrick’s Day edition of Smackdown with Drew McIntyre facing Sheamus, the man that Drew stood beside in 2022 as the best man when Sheamus got married. It’s a battle between best friends.

During last week’s March 10th edition of Smackdown, there was a Fatal 5-Way match between Sheamus, Drew McIntyre, LA Knight, Xavier Woods and Karrion Kross. The winner would get a shot at the Intercontinental Champion GUNTHER at WrestleMania 39.

Since it was a one-fall match, WWE decided to have a referee in the ring and a second referee on the floor that would go into the ring if there was another count (or submission attempt) happening at the same time. The finish of that match saw Sheamus hit a Brogue Kick and Drew McIntyre hit a Claymore Kick at relatively the same time. Drew and Sheamus each pinned their opponents at the same time.

Later on that same Smackdown, WWE Official Adam Pearce announced that Drew will face Sheamus on St. Patrick’s Day with the winner getting the match for the Intercontinental Title at WrestleMania 39.

In an interesting tweet posted by Sheamus, the Brawling Brute has suggested that the IC Title match at Wrestlemania 39 should main event night one on Saturday, April 1st.

There have been rumors of a GUNTHER-Drew McIntyre-Sheamus triple threat match at Wrestlemania 39 for several months, so perhaps a “tie” finish could happen again.

As of right now, WWE hasn’t advertised any match for the main event of WrestleMania 39 Night One. However, a tag team match between WWE Tag Team Champions The Usos vs. Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn is a possibility and so is the Charlotte Flair-Rhea Ripley match for the Smackdown Women’s Title.

The rumored main event of WrestleMania 39 Night Two on April 2nd is Roman Reigns defending the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship against Cody Rhodes.
