Ex-WWE Champion Was Almost Fired For Giving Finn Balor A Concussion
A former WWE Champion almost lost his job for giving Finn Balor a concussion.
2016 was a year of ups and downs for Finn Balor. After making it to the main roster, Balor made history by becoming the inaugural Universal Champion. Sadly, Balor suffered a serious shoulder injury during his Universal Championship match against Seth Rollins.
As a result, he had to relinquish the title the following night on WWE RAW and was sidelined for the next several months. Finn Balor made his return to the ring several months later. In his first televised singles match since returning from injury, he locked horns with Jinder Mahal. During the match, The Maharaja gave Balor a concussion after delivering a mistimed forearm strike.
Vince McMahon threatened to fire Jinder Mahal for hurting Finn Balor
During a recent interview with TMZ’s Inside The Ring, Jinder Mahal recalled the entire incident. He said that he and Balor practiced the sequence of moves several times during live events, but something went wrong on that night.
“One week before getting drafted to SmackDown, before I became WWE Champion, it was myself and Finn Balor in a singles match on RAW. I accidentally gave him a concussion. He was coming off the ropes, I gave him a forearm, and we would do this spot every night on the live events. As a hope spot, he would come off the ropes, I would give him a forearm. But just mistiming (…) I gave Finn Balor that concussion. Felt terrible.”
The former WWE Champion further added that Vince McMahon threatened to fire him for the incident. Jinder Mahal said that could’ve changed the trajectory of his career as he became WWE Champion a few weeks later.
“‘I should fire you.’ That would have changed the trajectory of my life because a week later, I went to SmackDown. And a week after that, I was [the] number one contender. And a month after, I was WWE Champion. Everything could have ended had I came [sic] back to Gorilla and Vince said, ‘You’re fired.’ It was very possible.” [H/T: WrestlePurists]
It looks like Finn Balor is still haunted by his shoulder injury in 2016, as he has never been able to recover from it and reclaim the World Title despite several failed attempts.
