Intercontinental Title Match Added To WWE Clash At The Castle

The Intercontinental Title will be on the line at WWE Clash at the Castle on September 3rd when Sheamus challenges the champion Gunther in what should be a hard-hitting matchup.

Sheamus earned the right to challenge Gunther for the Intercontinental Title on Smackdown this week after winning a Fatal 5-Way match that included Happy Corbin, Ricochet, Madcap Moss and fan favorite Sami Zayn, who was in his hometown of Montreal.

The crowd was really behind Zayn in the match even though Sami is known for being a villain when he’s away from Montreal. There was a point in the match where Zayn went to the back due to a left arm/shoulder injury, but then he came back into the ring and nearly got the win with a Helluva Kick on Ricochet. If Happy Corbin didn’t break up the pin then Zayn would have won. Shortly after that, Sheamus hit a Brogue Kick on Ricochet for the win.

Gunther did not compete on Smackdown this week, nor was he involved in a backstage segment although WWE did show highlights of Gunther beating Shinsuke Nakamura on last week’s Smackdown.

Sheamus will be going after the Intercontinental Title to try to complete his goal of winning every title in WWE. During 15 year run in WWE, the Celtic Warrior has been a WWE World Champion, he’s held the US Title, he’s held multiple versions of the Tag Team Titles, he’s a Royal Rumble winner, he won Money in the Bank, he was a King of the Ring winner and now all that’s left is winning the Intercontinental Title.

An interesting stat about the Intercontinental Title is that this will be the first time it will be defended on a WWE Premium Live Event since WrestleMania 37 in 2021. That show saw Apollo Crews beat Big E to become the Intercontinental Title. Since then, the IC Title has not been present on any WWE PLE show.
