AEW Changed Original Plans For Kenny Omega-MJF World Title Match
Kenny Omega beat MJF to become AEW World Champion on Dynamite, but it wasn’t the original plan.
In the main event of AEW Dynamite on July 8th, an episode branded as “Beach Break,” Kenny Omega became a 2-time AEW World Champion when he defeated Maxwell Jacob Friedman to win the gold.
There was some controversy towards the finish of the match. MJF grabbed the AEW World Title and rolled into the ring with it. The referee took the title, so of course MJF got the Dynamite Diamond Ring, and here comes Will Ospreay to grab the ring from MJF’s hand to prevent MJF from using the ring as a weapon. The referee, Bryce Remsburg, was looking at Ospreay.
Omega teased hitting MJF with the AEW World Title, but he didn’t. MJF hit a low blow uppercut and hit Omega with the AEW World Title for just a one count. The fans exploded for Omega. MJF was shocked. Omega was Hulking Up with strikes and a V-Trigger knee. Omega hit a second V-Trigger knee to the face. Omega hit a third V-Trigger knee. Omega hit the One Winged Angel for the pinfall win after 24 minutes, becoming the AEW World Champion for the second time.
There have been many AEW World Title matches on Dynamite this year, with MJF and former champion Darby Allin defending the gold multiple times. This was the second time this year that MJF lost the AEW World Title in a Dynamite match.
By winning the AEW World Title on Dynamite, Kenny Omega will go on to defend the gold at AEW All In London on August 30th against Will Ospreay, who earned the title shot after winning the Men’s Owen Hart Foundation Tournament.
Kenny Omega Facing MJF For The AEW World Title Was Going To Happen At Redemption PPV
In the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer revealed that AEW Owner Tony Khan’s original plan was for Omega to beat MJF at the Redemption PPV on July 26th, but the company decided to change that.
“This match, and stipulation, where if Omega lost he could never challenge for the AEW title again for the rest of his career, was the plan for the 7/26 Redemption show in Montreal. The idea was Canada and the name of the show was Omega getting his last shot after two high-profile losses.
“It was pushed, believed to be by MJF, to get it moved to television. I was not given a reason why, but it doesn’t matter where the suggestion came from, that’s a major change and Tony Khan approved of it. So he must feel he’s got something PPV-worthy for Montreal on 7/26.”
AEW has yet to announce an AEW World Title Match for the Redemption PPV on July 26th.
After his AEW World Title win, Kenny Omega addressed the fans on Dynamite.
“There’s an old saying that if anyone could be a professional wrestler, if anybody could be a champion so easily, then heck, probably everyone would do it.
But the truth is, none of this came easy. I could never have done it without the support of the people who are my friends, my family, who could have at any point kicked me out of my house and forced me to follow a different dream. But I always had the support not just of my friends, not just of my family, but my inherited family—and that means each and every one of you.
Now, I can’t lie, holding this belt just doesn’t quite seem proper. But holding what it represents, the AEW World Championship, now that means the world.
So from now until someone is good enough, someone is willing to sacrifice enough, someone is willing to push hard enough, this right here is going to stay around my waist. I can promise you that I may be nearer the end than I am the beginning of this journey, but what counts is that you finish hard and you finish the race. No matter how hard everything is, you finish the race.
That being said, MJF, I will give you credit. You never had to take this match. You never had to defend the belt as much as you did. You never had to show up every single week, but you did. And as far as I’m concerned, that sets a good example.
MJF, not only will I be the best champion I can be, but I’ll be a champion that even you are jealous of.
So until next time, which is probably going to be next week, I must bid you adieu. So goodbye, everyone, and good night – bang!”
