Good News For Fans Of The Shield In WWE
The upcoming Roman Reigns-Seth Rollins match has reminded WWE fans of the greatness of The Shield trio, who ran roughshod over everyone in their path.
When Seth Rollins confronted Roman Reigns on the June 29th edition of WWE Monday Night Raw, Rollins called Reigns his “brother’ while referencing their time in The Shield together.
The Shield was a trio of young wrestlers comprised of Rollins, Reigns, and Dean Ambrose. Of the three, Reigns was the least known among hardcore wrestling fans, but WWE had high hopes for him. Originally, the group was meant to be mercenaries helping CM Punk, but they eventually went off on their own to become major stars.
From their debut in November 2012 until Rollins turned on his two “brothers” in June 2014, The Shield dominated WWE for about a year and a half. They won titles, they put people through tables, and they impressed the fans along the way.
After the initial Shield breakup in 2014, there were many reunions in the years that followed, especially before Ambrose left WWE in 2019.
As singles wrestlers, it’s fair to say that The Shield trio lived up to the hype since Reigns and Rollins are all-time greats in WWE, while Ambrose had a good singles run for about five years before departing for AEW in 2019. In AEW, Ambrose has arguably been the company’s biggest star as Jon Moxley since he’s held their World Title more than anybody else.
At SummerSlam on August 1 and August 2, The Shield will be in the spotlight again as Roman Reigns defends the World Heavyweight Title against Seth Rollins. As Rollins pointed out, Reigns has yet to beat Rollins in a major PLE singles match, so the Tribal Chief will try to move on from his past by finally beating Rollins with the gold on the line.
On WWE Shop, the company is cashing in on that Shield nostalgia by selling a classic Shield t-shirt for $34.99 US.
Could The Shield Ever Reunite In WWE?
When Seth Rollins was asked about a potential reunion of The Shield during an interview earlier this year, The Architect wasn’t so sure about that.
“Well, not a lot of love lost between myself and Roman Reigns. Dean Ambrose—Jon Moxley—not currently with the company. Don’t know if he’s ever coming back. I would say the chances are very slim.
Maybe one day there will be a Hall of Fame induction where all three of us will be in the same place at the same time. I would say we’re looking at, like, maybe Kurt Angle has a better chance.”
Seth Rollins making the Kurt Angle-Shield reference was about how, at TLC 2017, Angle filled in for Reigns to team up with Rollins and Ambrose. The trio of Rollins, Ambrose, and Angle would go on to win a 3-on-5 TLC Match together.
