Multiple WWE Superstars Targeting GUNTHER’s Intercontinental Championship

Gunther cuts a promo on Raw

A lot of wrestlers are focused on championships in WWE and two veterans have recently made it clear they are coming after GUNTHER’s Intercontinental Title.

The longest reigning Intercontinental Champion in WWE history is the current champion GUNTHER, who recently passed 600 days as the champion.

GUNTHER has been Intercontinental Champion since June 2022 and unlike some champions in WWE, he defends the title often while finding a way to keep his title in every match. The champion’s last title defense was on the January 29th edition of Raw when he defeated a former champion, Kofi Kingston.

Two of the most memorable title defenses that GUNTHER has had were at Clash at the Castle 2022 against Sheamus in Wales and WrestleMania 39 in LA against Sheamus & Drew McIntyre. Both of those matches were considered Match of the Year contenders.

In a post on X/Twitter, former WWE World Champion Sheamus made it clear he wants to face GUNTHER again.

Sheamus hasn’t wrestled since August 18, 2023 when he lost to Edge in Toronto. Sheamus has been dealing with an injury and it’s unknown when he will return.

During his career that will likely see him end up in the WWE Hall of Fame, Sheamus has won every title there is to win in WWE except the Intercontinental Title, so that’s a big reason why he wants to hold it as well.

Bronson Reed Claims He Has Unfinished Business with GUNTHER

In addition to Sheamus, Raw superstar Bronson Reed also wants to face GUNTHER one more time. The powerful Australian Reed lost to the champion on the October 16th edition of Raw.

While talking to Sportskeeda, Reed spoke about potential future opponents.

“I mean, there’s a lot of people I’d like to face. Seth Rollins was one of them, but obviously now he is injured. I don’t know how that would work. There is obviously the Intercontinental Champion roaming around here somewhere. Gunther is someone that I got unfinished business with.”

“But literally anyone, you know, Australia, my home country, I’d love to just be a part of the event.”

The event in Australia that Reed was referencing is the upcoming Elimination Chamber PLE on February 27th.
