The partnership between WWE and ESPN continues for Premium Live Events.

It was announced in August 2025 that sports giant ESPN and WWE struck a deal for ESPN’s streaming service to become the new home of WWE Premium Live Events (PLE’s) in the United States.

The deal was costly for ESPN, at $1.6 billion over five years, or $325 million annually, which means fans in the US will need ESPN Unlimited to watch WWE PLEs for four more years.

Since ESPN is also a cable TV giant, the two companies have worked together to put two PLE matches on ESPN or ESPN2 in the first hour of the PLE broadcast. For example, at Night of Champions on June 27th, Oba Femi winning King of the Ring and Iyo Sky winning Queen of the Ring were shown on ESPN in the first hour of the show.

Paul “Triple H” Levesque is WWE’s Chief Content Officer, meaning he’s the guy who runs the company creatively and decides how many matches are on a PLE, who wins them, and how they finish. Since Triple H has been running things since July 2022, many PLEs have had only five matches, which frustrates fans who want to see more wrestlers and more matches on a PLE. For major shows like WrestleMania and SummerSlam, there are usually 13-14 matches over two nights, but that’s not the case for most PLEs.

Following a recent report about ESPN requesting more matches at Night of Champions, the Wrestling Observer Newsletter’s Dave Meltzer reported that ESPN is definitely not a silent partner to WWE.

WrestleVotes reported that this show was six matches instead of five due to ESPN feeling that they needed at least four matches not on television to convince people who aren’t ESPN Unlimited subscribers to subscribe. This was largely confirmed to us as accurate and it was noted that ESPN are definitely not silent partners in this deal and are always coming up with ideas.

While the ESPN association has likely helped WWE by being promoted by the mainstream sports powerhouse, many people also complain that ESPN likely overpaid for the PLEs and is running too many commercials during its broadcasts.

WWE Executive Believes Triple H And Leadership Team Are Open To New Ideas

The first WWE PLE of the ESPN era was called Wrestlepalooza in September 2025. Later in 2025, WWE ownership TKO Group President and Chief Operating Officer, Mark Shapiro, talked about how WWE management, like President Nick Khan and CCO Triple H, are willing to try new things.

“They’re open to new ideas. They never seem exhausted. They’re ready to take on a new shot, a new risk, a new opportunity. ‘Hey, Nick, let’s talk about launching a new event.’ Right now, a lot of our PLEs were created by Vince McMahon.

We need to get in the business of taking that torch and moving past that, and Nick (Khan) and Triple H created Wrestlepalooza, which is the launch event for our new ESPN deal, which did incredibly well and may turn into a superfranchise.

Not to mention from a merch standpoint, I don’t need to tell you, securing the I.P. rights and then selling merch at Wrestlepalooza, let’s just say it was a real winner.”

It’s not yet known whether WWE will hold WrestleMania again in 2026. Since it was in September last year, it likely would have been announced by now if it were in September this year.
