Kofi Kingston Update On Foot Injury

Kofi Kingston will be out of action due to a foot injury suffered on the March 3rd edition of WWE Friday Night Smackdown.

During the March 3rd edition of Smackdown, a promo segment took place with Drew McIntyre saying he wanted to challenge GUNTHER for the Intercontinental Title at WrestleMania 39. The promo was interrupted by Drew’s good friend Sheamus, who made it clear he wanted the Intercontinental Title match.

There were also interruptions by LA Knight, Kofi Kingston (with Xavier Woods) and Karrion Kross. A brawl took place between the five men and Woods, which saw McIntyre hit a somersault dive over the top onto a bunch of guys. That dive by McIntyre injured Kingston by accident because when McIntyre landed on Kofi, Kingston ended up hurting his right foot. It’s such a fluky thing, but when a big man is diving over the top, you never know what might happen.

Later on Smackdown, a fatal 5-way match was announced between McIntyre, Sheamus, Kingston, Kross and Knight for this week’s (March 10th) Smackdown and the winner of that match will get an Intercontinental Title match against GUNTHER at WrestleMania.

Kofi Kingston had an update on Twitter when he posted a brief video with his right foot taped up and the caption: “We gon’ be alright!”

As for how long Kingston might miss, there is hope that Kingston will not need surgery to repair the injury and could be back in about five weeks, which is right around WrestleMania or shortly after. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter by Dave Meltzer mentioned that surgery is likely not needed.

“Kofi Kingston suffered an ankle injury when McIntyre did a running flip dive on several people. It was just a fluke deal. The time frame we are hearing is five weeks. There was concern earlier it could be longer because he may have needed surgery and if he does need surgery it would be lengthy. But all impressions are based on what he said publicly and the word privately is that he won’t be needing the surgery right now.”

“The plan for the 3/10 Smackdown show was McIntyre vs. Sheamus vs. Knight vs. Cross vs. Kingston for the IC title shot at Mania but with Kingston injured he’ll be out of that bout.”

On Thursday, WWE officially announced that Kofi Kingston’s buddy in The New Day, Xavier Woods, will take Kofi’s spot. Woods commented on it saying he has yet to have a match with a singles title on the line, so he is determined to win.

Tonight’s episode of Smackdown takes place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
