WWE News: Nia Jax vs. Dean Ambrose Advertised for “Intergender Special Attraction” Match at Feb. 22 Live Event

UPDATE: This match is not happening now according to WWE. They promoted it on Friday and then on Sunday they said it’s outdated. Plans always change, of course. I’ll leave the original story below as I wrote it on Friday.

Nia Jax vs. Dean Ambrose? That’s not like most matches. Sorry. I had to.

It has been a very long time since WWE has promoted a man vs. woman match known as an intergender match, but they are doing it again for a live event in Jonesboro, Arkansas on February 22. The match will see former WWE Champion Dean Ambrose facing former Raw Women’s Champion Nia Jax.

You can watch part of the commercial promoting the match below. Thanks to twitter user @flairsnia for posting it.

Here’s the full 15-second commercial featuring Jax vs. Ambrose.

Jax was in the men’s Royal Rumble match on January 27th after she attacked R-Truth. She eliminated Mustafa Ali and then was eliminated after Rey Mysterio, Dolph Ziggler and Randy Orton worked together to eliminate her.

The next night, Ambrose and Jax had their first physical altercation on the January 28th edition of Raw when they went face to face and then Jax knocked Ambrose out of the ring with a forearm to the back.

This past week on Raw, while Jax was interrupting the “Moment of Bliss” talk show, Ambrose interrupted her and told her to get out of his way. Ambrose went on to insult EC3, which led to a match that EC3 won quickly.

It’s not known if the Ambrose story with Jax will lead to a pay-per-view match, but since they are doing the match at a live event in two weeks, it’s possible it could lead to a PPV match. It’s probably not going to happen at Elimination Chamber on February 17th, but maybe Fastlane on March 10. They could also wait until WrestleMania on April 7, so it will be interesting to see how they handle this.

As we reported last month, Ambrose is expected to leave WWE when his contract expires in April with WWE releasing this statement that confirmed the reports that existed saying he was leaving the company:

“Dean Ambrose (Jonathan Good) will not be renewing his contract with WWE when it expires in April. We are grateful and appreciative of all that Dean has given to WWE and our fans. We wish him well and hope that one day Dean will return to WWE.”

There are some people that believe it’s just a storyline, but not me. I believe it’s true. Clearly, WWE has a plan in mind with Ambrose where he’s going to lose every match he’s in like when he lost to Seth Rollins two weeks ago, he lost to EC3 last week and he’ll probably lose to Nia Jax whenever they have a televised match.

TJR Thoughts: I’m not a fan of intergender wrestling, but I think WWE wants to give it a try because it’s Jax, who is legitimately 250 pounds or whatever they want to list her at. I think it’s a case of WWE wanting to try something different to try to get people more interested in the product since television ratings are going down and attendance is going down. Yes, they are making money due to TV deals and other factors, but they want to get the crowds up. By advertising a man vs. woman match, at least it is something different.

Does this mean we’ll see other women face men? I have my doubts about that. I think this is just going to be a Nia Jax thing because of how big she is. I don’t see Sasha Banks and her 115 pound body facing off against a 350 pounder like Braun Strowman for example. I doubt WWE sponsors would like it, so WWE will likely play it safe and only put Jax in that situation.
