Report: WWE Plans to Make Universal Title Match at WrestleMania a Triple Threat Match: Roman Reigns vs. Edge vs. Daniel Bryan

The main event of WWE Fastlane saw Roman Reigns retain the Universal Title over Daniel Bryan in controversial fashion. Following a referee bump during the match, Edge took over as the referee because he was the Special Ringside Enforcer for the match. Bryan had Reigns locked in the Yes Lock submission and Reigns was tapping out, which should have meant that Bryan won the Universal Title. Instead, Edge hit Bryan and Reigns with steel chair shots. Edge actually hit Bryan two times and Reigns once. The reason Edge did that is that there was a spot earlier in the match where Bryan charged with the chair (while the referee was on the floor), Reigns moved and Bryan hit Edge in the arm. Anyway, following Edge’s chair attack, Reigns pinned Bryan to retain the Universal Title.

There have been all kinds of reports of what the WrestleMania plan (for April 10-11) is. After the Royal Rumble, it was locked in as Universal Champion Roman Reigns vs. Royal Rumble winner Edge. Over the last week, there were rumblings that maybe Daniel Bryan would be added to the match. Apparently, that’s the plan now.

It is being reported late tonight by the Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer that the “key main event for WrestleMania is now confirmed to be a three-way with Roman Reigns vs. Edge vs. Daniel Bryan for the Universal title.”

Meltzer noted that it was confirmed that the finish was done to set up the triple threat match at WrestleMania. It’s not known when WWE might announce it whether they wait until Friday’s Smackdown or if they announce it earlier in the week.

Another part of Meltzer’s post mentioned “Edge’s apparent heel turn.” What we don’t know is if that’s confirmed or if it’s just an opinion. To me, Edge was retaliating to Bryan hitting him with a chair first. Then again, Edge did do multiple chair shots and was yelling at both guys.

The confirmed matches for WrestleMania on April 10-11 as of this writing are:

* WWE Championship: Bobby Lashley (c) vs. Drew McIntyre

* Universal Championship: Roman Reigns (c) vs. Edge – We may be adding Daniel Bryan to that.

* Smackdown Women’s Championship: Sasha Banks (c) vs. Bianca Belair

* Raw Tag Team Championships: The New Day – Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods (c) vs. AJ Styles & Omos

TJR Thoughts: I’m cool with this. It’s not like I’m ever going to complain about my favorite wrestler Daniel Bryan in a main event match. I just thought they were going with Reigns vs. Edge, which is also what I was told by somebody inside WWE a few days ago. They also said “things can always change too” and they certainly have.

It is a bit strange that Edge would turn heel after coming back after nearly a decade. Edge was at his best as a heel in his career, but turning a legendary figure that came back from nearly a decade away is a bit strange.
