Triple H Subtly Encouraged WWE Legend To Oppose Vince McMahon
Triple H okayed a dangerous spot that a WWE legend did in a big match, even though Vince McMahon didn’t like it.
When Becky Lynch faced Trish Stratus in a Steel Cage match at the WWE Payback PLE in September 2023, it was a grudge match to end a rivalry that had been going on for about five months.
At the time, WWE Hall of Famer Paul “Triple H” Levesque was entrenched as the WWE Chief Content Officer, but Vince McMahon unretired earlier in 2023 and was WWE’s Chairman again.
What that meant was that Triple H was in charge of WWE creatively, but his father-in-law, McMahon, could sometimes overrule him.
During a recent appearance on Busted Open Radio, WWE Hall of Famer Trish Stratus recalled wanting to do a dangerous spot from the top of the cage. Stratus believed she could do it safely, but not everybody agreed with her.
“You know what it was? It was the thing at the top when I did the — I fell backwards. No one’s done it before mostly because the guys you could never fit your feet under the thing, but I knew I could and I knew I’d be secure and I had to talk to Vince — Vince was like didn’t want me to do it.
He had never seen it done before. He’s like didn’t feel safe. And I assured him I’m like I do it on the playground with my kids all the time.”
Trish continued by explaining that while Vince didn’t want the dangerous cage spot done, Triple H okayed it subtly, so she did it.
“It was a moment actually Vince kiboshed it entirely and everyone was like, ‘It’s not happening.’ And I was so bummed because I was excited about that kind of a shocker moment.
And then Triple H gave me a bit of the Iggy… he kind of was like, ‘Yeah, he doesn’t want you to do it,’ just kind of gave me that look and I was like, ‘Gotcha.’”
Triple H May Be More Secure Than Ever In WWE
It was announced earlier this week that Paul “Triple H” Levesque has renewed his contract with a new multi-year deal (believed to be at least three years) and will continue as the CCO of WWE.
When former WCW President and WWE Hall of Famer Eric Bischoff discussed The Game’s new WWE deal on his podcast, he wasn’t surprised by it, even though some critics believe Triple H could be fired due to WWE business not being as hot as it was in the last few years.
“I’m not surprised. I didn’t know that he was up for a new agreement. Certainly not surprised that he got another one, and hopefully he got a raise. Because I think if anything, the last couple of WrestleManias is where you’ve had interference from people who really don’t understand the audience as well as they think they do.
And I don’t mean that with disrespect, because obviously Ari Emanuel and the people around him have forgotten more about entertainment and connecting with the audience than yours truly will ever experience.”
Bischoff went on to argue that he believes Triple H’s job security may be strong.
“As someone who kind of understands the inside a little bit, who’s watching from the outside and seeing the patterns that I have a tendency to see, I see that a lot of people, it’s sheer enthusiasm. You ended up with too many cooks in the kitchen when it came to making these decisions, and unfortunately the cooks with the least experience had the most stroke.
Now do we think that’s going to keep happening, or do we think that this group of people who are really, really smart are going, you know what, we really do need this guy? I think Paul’s position is probably more secure now than it was two years ago.”
While everybody may not agree with Bischoff’s position, it’s hard to imagine anybody else leading WWE right now, other than Triple H.
