Triple H Confirms Vince McMahon Rumor: “He’s Still Directing Traffic”
Triple H officially took over as the head of WWE’s creative team in September 2022.
Despite relinquishing his duties, Vince McMahon was still around at the time. While Hunter’s work went on to be appreciated by fans and critics alike, questions were being asked about his father-in-law’s involvement.
Over time, reports claimed that Vince was providing creative insights despite quitting from the Stamford promotion due to legal cases filed against him by shareholders as well as a former employee.
The current Chief Content Officer was the guest on Cody Rhodes’ What Do You Wanna Talk About? podcast recently, where he was asked if he felt that WrestleMania 40 was his first full WrestleMania as the CCO.
In response, Triple H confirmed that Vince McMahon was involved in the creative process, and the transition period was complicated despite how it looked to a common man.
I think so. Though, you know, there was—and again, this is where I’m terrible at times—it’s not like one day, ‘Here, it’s yours,’ and everything else went away, right? There were so many aspects of that—of, you know, ‘Hey, Vince is stepping away, you’re going to take his spot,’ but he’s still chiming in, he’s still meeting with me all the time, and he’s still directing traffic from the side. There’s no real—it’s weird—no real clear moment.
The 14-time champion further revealed complications related to accountability for decisions that were not necessarily his all the time.
The only thing that is difficult in that transition—you’re trying to… at the end of the day, when people are like, ‘Yeah, but it’s your decision, right?’ Yeah, sort of. Yes—and you have to defend your position and sell that to people if it’s a little bit not your position, or ‘Why did this happen?’
Triple H also said that accepting accountability was tough because he wasn’t the only voice in the creative process. Nevertheless, he confirmed that his official run as the full-time CCO began at WrestleMania 40.
You don’t want to say, ‘Well, it wasn’t totally my decision.’ Not because you don’t want to seem like you don’t have power—you just have to present it that way. But I would consider it that, yeah.
Triple H Discusses The Complexities With WWE Creative
Triple H also touched upon the criticism WWE has been dealing with due to inconsistencies in different storylines. He highlighted that multiple issues, like injuries, camaraderie between wrestlers, etc., often lead to forced changes that can frustrate fans.
It’s just so complex. There are so many aspects—even on just a regular, general, daily basis—you’re putting something out there, and in some manner, in an ideal world, I would do this. We don’t live in an ideal world—it’s a real world. I can’t do that because of this or that. It can be something as simple as these two people don’t get along. I know this person has an injury that I can’t put out there—whatever the moment, the sequence is.
There are so many factors to all of it. I wish it was as simple as what people think when they go, ‘Why don’t they just do this?’ I wish it was.
Despite the prevailing issues, Triple H confirming that Vince McMahon was a part of the creative direction even after giving up his spot is the key takeaway here.
