Vince McMahon Was Unhappy With Ex-WWE Star Being “Too funny”
Vince McMahon was unhappy with a former WWE star.
Mr. Anderson first gained traction due to his time in WWE, where he wrestled under the ring name Mr. Kennedy. He was one of the most entertaining stars on the roster who could cut a promo.
At one point, he was one of the fastest-rising stars on WWE SmackDown. He picked up some big wins against some former World Champions. It looked like Anderson was going to become a World Champion in the company. However, that didn’t end up happening. Mr. Kennedy was fired from the WWE after a botched back suplex he gave Randy Orton. The Viper was unhappy with the botched move, and he complained to management that Mr. Kennedy was an unsafe worker. He also got John Cena to express concern. This led to his release from the company. Following his release, he went to TNA Wrestling, where he wrestled under the ring name Mr. Anderson. He had a good run with TNA.
Mr. Anderson revealed why Vince McMahon was unhappy with him after a segment
During an interview with Soundsphere Magazine, Mr. Anderson recalled Vince McMahon telling him before one of his promos that he just has to focus on being entertaining.
“I remember asking Vince, ‘What do you want me to do in this promo?’ And he was just like, ‘Don’t go out there and worry about being a good guy or a bad guy, just get over. Just be entertaining.
However, following a segment with Tony Chimel, Vince told the former WWE star that he was too funny. Later, the former WWE Chairman clarified that funny does not equal money. This made it clear to Anderson how much the company was willing to push that side of his personality.
“Vince flat-out told me I was too funny, I came back through the curtain after that jelly donut bit with Chimel and he just goes, ‘Too funny, god**mmit.’ Later he said to me, ‘Funny does not equal money.’ That’s when I realised there was a ceiling on how far they wanted me to push that side of my personality. I said, ‘What about The Rock?’ And he was like, ‘Well, I hear you, but…’” [H/T Fightful]
It would’ve been interesting to see how far Mr. Kennedy would’ve gone in the WWE if he hadn’t been released.
