Details Revealed On How Long Vince McMahon Had WWE Creative Power For
A new report sheds light on Vince McMahon’s much-debated involvement with WWE creative following his first departure in July 2022.
Vince McMahon stepped down from the position of CEO of WWE in 2022 pending an investigation of hush money settlements he had made to cover alleged acts of sexual misconduct with former employees who had now spoken against the wrestling mogul.
During his absence, his son-in-law and WWE Icon Triple H was appointed CCO (Chief Creative Officer), his daughter Stephanie McMahon was appointed as the CEO, and Nick Khan was appointed as Co-CEO of WWE.
He later had to leave WWE and its owners, TKO, at a point of no return after a WWE employee, Janel Grant, came out with sexual trafficking and assault allegations against him. Since then, McMahon has distanced himself from WWE and TKO.
Earlier in this timeline, WWE was to be bought over by Endeavor Group Holdings, which was also acquiring UFC and forming a new company under the symbol TKO in 2023. Vince McMahon had returned to the board in January 2023, six months after his initial departure to facilitate WWE’s sale to Endeavor, and was to have 34% of the shares of The TKO group upon the deal’s completion.
The public was led to believe that Vince’s investigation was ongoing and he wasn’t involved with WWE creative at the time, but new reports from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Wrestlenomics, and Post Wrestling suggest otherwise.
New Reports Suggest That Vince McMahon Was Involved In WWE Creative In 2023
Wrestlenomics and Post Wrestling revealed documents and text messages obtained from the ongoing WWE shareholder lawsuit. The lawsuit accuses McMahon of breaching fiduciary duties to remain in power.
It unearthed a text message from current TKO executive Mark Shapiro, sent on July 22, 2022, on the day McMahon initially announced his retirement.
Nick and Stephanie are going to take over the WWE for the next nine months.
Vince [will] be back with a new board, or he will take the company private, or he will sell it/coming to us. The race is on. The courtship is on.
Surely enough, Vince McMahon came back in January 2023 to facilitate the TKO deal.
The newly disclosed documents and texts confirm that McMahon was involved in the creative process leading up to WrestleMania 39. This is contrary to public statements made by WWE Co-CEO Nick Khan, who stated on CNBC that McMahon had no involvement in creative because he was no longer in an executive role.
Dave Meltzer’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter report indicates that the official change in dynamics in WWE’s creative took place only when Ari Emanuel, the CEO of TKO, stepped in.
Emanuel reportedly “decreed that Levesque in fact was actually going to be in charge of creative,” which was likely done because there were “complaints about McMahon’s changes to the shows at the last minute most weeks.”
Before the Janel Grant allegations went public, Vince McMahon was still involved with WWE creative, these new reports suggest. Some conspire that he may still be involved secretly with the writing process.
