The Rock’s movie career and love of UFC are about to collide.

It’s been announced that The Rock will team up with director Benny Safdie for The Smashing Machine. The A24 movie is based on a 2002 documentary of the same name and will see the WWE legend play Mark Kerr.

Kerr is a former UFC star whose life and career were completely derailed by a battle with addiction.

The description of the film reads:

“‘The Smashing Machine’ is a drama based on the story of Mark Kerr, the legendary MMA fighter from the no-holds-barred era of the UFC at the peak of his career. He struggles with addiction, winning, love and friendship in the year 2000.”

A24’s Noah Sacco said the company is honoured to work with The Rock and Benny Safdie.

“Dwayne and Benny are singular talents, and their shared vision for Mark’s inspiring story is electrifying. We are deeply honored to have their trust as collaborators in bringing this incredibly special project to life,”

The Rock Pondered Career In MMA

During an interview back in November, The Rock revealed he almost quit WWE to pursue a career in MMA. The former WWE Champion recalled becoming frustrated with life as a wrestler in 1997, as he watched MMA stars secure huge paydays for fights with PRIDE.

The star revealed that he even reached out to Ken Shamrock and Kerr to discuss the situation.
