The AEW Women’s World Championship has been defended somewhat regularly recently, with Thekla recently defending her title against Thunder Rosa earlier this month.

The Toxic Spider only recently won the title from Kris Statlander, whom she defeated in a Strap Match at an episode of Dynamite, a little over a month ago.

These two women have been at each other’s throats for several weeks now and finally looked to put things to an end tonight as they met each other in a two out of three falls match in Los Angeles.

While an intense match type, it somewhat favored the champion, as Thekla had only been pinned twice in the company till now. The match was brutal, and Thekla gained the first pinfall controversially.

Thekla retained the AEW Women’s World Championship

She rolled Statlander up near the ropes and used them to her advantage while pinning Kris, outside of the eyeline of the referee. This earned her the first pin, leaving Statlander at a disadvantage.

The former Women’s World Champion then wrestled her way back in the match and finally pinned the Toxic Spider for the third time in the company and got the AEW Women’s World Championship match back level.

The champion then used her brain to get some advantage in the match. She sent Kris straight into the referee, knocking him out of the ring. She then took hold of his belt and went to use it on Statlander.

However it backfired, and Statlander grabbed the belt before unleashing an attack on her. She then hit a piledriver, but wasn’t able to get the pin as no referee was present in the ring. She thwarted the Triangle of Maddness as well during this time.

The challenger tried to use the belt again, but the referee was back by then and took the belt from her, distracting the former champion. Thekla took advantage of the situation and hit Kris with a surprise spear and followed it up with two stomps to retain the championship.
