John Cena Admits Mistake After First WWE Match: “I Dropped The Ball”

After a 23-year career in WWE, John Cena is hardly synonymous with failure.

However, that was not the case following his debut in the company. On June 27, 2002, Cena answered an open challenge from Kurt Angle on SmackDown, practically kicking off the Ruthless Aggression era.

As monumental as that interaction was, Cena’s subsequent appearances were subpar, which even came to the point where he was being considered to be released.

His repackaging as the Doctor of Thuganomics drastically shaped his career and his future in the business overall.

John Cena went on to become a record 17-time world champion before retiring at Saturday Night’s Main Event in December 2025.

John Cena Admits To ‘Dropping The Ball’ After His Debut WWE Match

John Cena recently appeared on the No-Contest Wrestling podcast, where he spoke about the highs and lows of his wrestling career with World Wrestling Entertainment.

He also discussed his debut match against Kurt Angle while admitting to ‘dropping the ball,’ forcing him to reinvent himself to be presented as worthy of a character that the audience deserved.

I had a nice way of existing in OVW, but it was way more character-based, it was way more promo-based, and I dropped the ball. It’s on me. I was neither ruthless nor aggressive. From Jump Street, I go at Kurt Angle. I slap him in the face. I come this close to winning.

And then I see The Undertaker backstage and I’m a f**king fan. I shake his hand. If I was ruthless, I would have kicked him in the nuts. If I was aggressive, I would have said, “Don’t stick your hand out. I’m coming for you next.” I was neither ruthless nor aggressive. That’s why it failed. But I didn’t realize they gave me a chance, and I think that’s what a lot of performers don’t realize. If you walk out of the tunnel, you have a chance.

I wasn’t given any direction. Cut your hair and be a babyface. That’s it. Admittedly, at my age and development, I needed more guidance. But I dropped the ball. My fault. [41:55 onwards]
