Dave Meltzer Awards Two WWE WrestleMania Matches Five Stars
Another WrestleMania is in the books and according to noted wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer, two matches on the card stood head and shoulders above all others.
In 39 WrestleMania shows, only two matches had been awarded five stars by Meltzer on the grandest stage of them all. The first of those took place at WrestleMania 10 in 1994 when Razor Ramon defeated Shawn Michaels in one of the most famous ladder matches of all time for the Intercontinental Championship.
The second of these matches took place in 1997 at WrestleMania 13 when Bret Hart defeated Stone Cold Steve Austin in a submission match that launched Austin’s career to a whole new level.
Now in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Meltzer has doubled the number of WrestleMania matches that have received five stars as he awarded two matches the rating from WrestleMania 39.
The first of those bouts headlined night one of the event as Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens defeated The Usos to cap off Zayn’s incredible story with The Bloodline to capture the WWE Tag Team Championship.
On night two, five stars was given to the hard-hitting Intercontinental Championship triple threat match that saw Gunther see off the challenge of Sheamus and Drew McIntyre. That follows Sheamus and Gunther’s one-on-one bout at Clash at the Castle in September 2022 which also received five stars.
