CM Punk Pitched To Return For Blockbuster Title Match At WWE SummerSlam
CM Punk could return to challenge a major WWE champion at SummerSlam, but it’s neither Cody Rhodes nor Roman Reigns.
The Best in the World has been absent from the Stamford-based company since losing the World Heavyweight Championship to Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 42.
During a recent episode of his Notsam Wrestling podcast, WWE analyst Sam Roberts pitched a scenario in which Gunther would capture the Undisputed WWE Championship this Saturday at Night of Champions when he competes against Sami Zayn and the current titleholder, Cody Rhodes, in a Triple Threat Match in Saudi Arabia.
The 42-year-old then suggested Punk could then return and challenge The Ring General for the title at SummerSlam, a year after The Second City Saint beat Gunther for the World Heavyweight Championship at the same premium live event.
What if CM Punk came back and said, ‘Well, I’m gonna get the rematch with Gunther,’ right? Because now you go, ‘Okay, last time CM Punk fought Gunther for the title, it was SummerSlam a year ago, and CM Punk won, and then Seth Rollins cashed in.’ So, if CM Punk fights Gunther for the WWE Championship at SummerSlam, well, now I’m sitting there going, ‘Was Gunther gonna lose the title after a month?’
Because I want CM Punk to win that match because I want Cody Rhodes vs. CM Punk to be a WWE Championship match that we get to. But I could all, you know, like that. I would probably make CM Punk vs. Gunther the WWE Championship match at SummerSlam just because it leaves so many options open. [29:36 onwards]
Sam Roberts Pitches Cody Rhodes Vs. Sami Zayn For WWE SummerSlam
During the same episode of Notsam Wrestling, Sam Roberts proposed that Gunther pins Sami Zayn to win the Undisputed WWE Title at Night of Champions, leading to real animosity between The Last Real Good Guy and Cody Rhodes.
The WWE analyst added that The American Nightmare could then fight Zayn in a grudge match at SummerSlam.
So, now there’s real animosity with Sami Zayn and Cody Rhodes because Sami Zayn’s gonna turn around and go like, Look, I was watching your back in that Triple Threat match. That’s the only reason you were a distraction and you cost me that match. And by the way, a week before that Triple Threat match, I saved your title. You never would have had that title. We wouldn’t have even had the Triple Threat match if I hadn’t saved that title and put it around your waist.’
So, Sami still feels this sort of, you know, justification around the whole thing. And that leads us into a match that I feel like, and we can talk about where you’re gonna go with Gunther and I have other ideas and we’ll get there, but, like, to me, if you go in that direction, now you’ve got the ability to put on Sami Zayn versus Cody Rhodes at SummerSlam. A pure grudge match. You can make it No Holds Barred or not make it No Holds Barred. It doesn’t need a stipulation. It’s just about two guys that have this animosity towards each other. And I feel that to me has the potential to steal the show.
