The Elite may be coming back to AEW television soon according to a recent report that has noted that AEW’s investigation of a backstage fight could be wrapping up soon.
At AEW All Out on September 4th, The Elite trio of Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson) became the first-ever Trios Tag Team Champions. They took a celebratory photo backstage. Omega was back healthy after a long layoff while The Young Bucks were babyfaces again after being heels prior to that.
It was a few hours after The Elite won the Trios Tag Team Titles that things escalated to the point where The Elite got into a backstage fight with CM Punk and his friend/former AEW producer Ace Steel. That locker room fight saw Punk throw punches at Matt while Steel threw a chair to give Nick a black eye while Steel also bit Omega in the arm. As a result of the fight, those five men were suspended (Punk is also out of action after having arm surgery) and Steel ended up being fired.
In an update on the status of The Elite group, Dave Meltzer said on Wrestling Observer Radio (available for subscribers) that he believes the investigation into the All Out “fight” is wrapping up.
“I mean, I think that this thing feels like it’s wrapping up. It feels like The Young Bucks, [Kenny] Omega coming back somewhat soon. I mean, that’s not official or anything like that. It was just that feeling that, you know, there’s been teasers and stuff so then we’ll see you know how that all goes.”
Meltzer has previously said that Punk returning to AEW is “doubtful” at this point because his contract may be bought out.
What isn’t known is how long of a suspension The Elite were given or if it was just a case of the suspension possibly ending when the investigation wrapped up.
The next AEW pay-per-view is Full Gear on Saturday, November 19th with Jon Moxley set to defend the AEW World Title against Maxwell Jacob Friedman in the main event. It’s unknown if The Elite will be back for that show.
