WWE News on Drew McIntyre Defending WWE Title Against Goldberg at Royal Rumble, Goldberg’s WWE Contract

The main event of WWE Monday Night Raw last night saw Drew McIntyre defeat Keith Lee in an excellent match to retain the WWE Title. They got about 25 minutes, they worked their asses off and both guys were impressive. Then after the match, Bill Goldberg showed up at the end of Legends Night. Goldberg wasn’t advertised for Legends Night, nor was he shown in the first 2 hours, 55 minutes of Raw, but there was in the last few minutes of the show.

Goldberg, who is 54-years-old, challenged Drew McIntyre to a WWE Title match at the Royal Rumble. McIntyre, who is 35-years-old, laughed it off and told Goldberg that fighting him would be like fighting his dad. Goldberg shoved McIntyre on his ass to show that he is still a strong guy. McIntyre got back in, put his head up against Goldberg, who pushed back and then the show ended. It felt like it was rushed a bit.

It is being reported by Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer that WWE decided on Saturday to go with McIntyre vs. Goldberg at Royal Rumble. The reason why they are doing this match is that WWE didn’t have anybody else they felt they could use to put against McIntyre at Royal Rumble. It’s also a first time ever matchup between a current star in McIntyre and a guy like Goldberg that held a major title last year in WWE.

It was about one month ago on WWE’s The Bump when Goldberg challenged Roman Reigns to a match. That might happen later in the year, but for now, Goldberg’s focusing on facing Drew McIntyre at the Royal Rumble. It just shows how WWE changes things often because they had Goldberg call out Reigns and now he’s against McIntyre.

Goldberg has a contract with WWE that will see him wrestle at least two matches per year through 2023 (that news comes from Goldberg himself). If WWE does a Saudi Arabia show later that could be one of them, but they do have many other shows they can pick obviously.

Goldberg is a three-time World Champion in WWE history. His last major title reign was last year when he beat The Fiend for the Universal Title. Goldberg dropped the Universal Title to Braun Strowman at WrestleMania 35 last year although that was originally supposed to be Roman Reigns, who chose to not wrestle at WrestleMania last year.

It should be noted that WWE hasn’t officially announced McIntyre vs. Goldberg for the WWE Title at Royal Rumble yet. However, it’s likely what they are doing.

TJR Thoughts: I’m not enthusiastic about this idea at all, but I guess it’s a way to have Drew beating a former top guy. If Goldberg wins…I really don’t even think about that as a possibility. I just don’t see it happening. Then again, I thought The Fiend would beat Goldberg last year and that didn’t happen. I just think it makes no sense for Goldberg to win here. If they want to do Goldberg vs. Reigns at WrestleMania I don’t really want to see that either, but if they do go that route, hopefully Drew is able to keep his title. Just don’t give Goldberg another title run. Please.
