A WWE Hall of Famer believes CM Punk did the right thing by slapping the phone from a fan who was invading a private moment between friends.

WrestleMania 42 took place in Las Vegas for the second time, and this time around, there were a lot of stories of fans approaching WWE personnel in hotel lobbies, as well as other places in the city.

On Sunday night, April 19th, CM Punk lost the World Heavyweight Title to Roman Reigns in the WrestleMania Sunday main event. It was an outstanding match that ended with Reigns hitting a Spear to win.

After the match, CM Punk was hobbling around ringside and even collapsed a few times. While there was some concern, Punk wasn’t injured. Instead, he was just selling because he was in a 35-minute main event match.

Later that evening, after WrestleMania 42, TMZ obtained footage of CM Punk confronting a fan. A video from another fan showed that Punk’s WWE friend, Bayley, was hugging Punk’s wife (and Bayley’s good friend), AJ Lee, in the lobby of the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino on the Vegas Strip. As Bayley hugged Lee, a fan was taking a photo or filming a video of it, so an enraged Punk smacked the phone out of the man’s hand.

There was security between Punk and the man with the phone to prevent anything from happening. Punk’s good friend, former wrestler Ace Steel, was also seen in the video trying to calm Punk down. The fan could be heard saying “sorry” to Punk and “bad day” as well. Punk left with Lee at that point.

After TMZ obtained footage from the fan whose phone was slapped by Punk, it revealed that the guy filming followed Bayley as she hugged Lee. Bayley could be heard saying, “Go away, dude. Get out of here.”

CM Punk Did The Right Thing, According To JBL

The incident between CM Punk and the fan led to debates online from fans thinking that Punk went too far and even claiming Punk “assaulted” the fan. Others believe that the fan got too close to Bayley and Lee, and should have given them some space.

While speaking on his Something To Wrestle podcast, WWE Hall of Famer John Bardshaw Layfield (aka JBL) thinks Punk did the right thing because he was protecting his wife.

“I don’t blame him. That’s his wife, and I don’t blame him at all. He’s taking care of his wife. He’s protecting her, and I think I would have done probably the same thing, right or wrong.

I have no idea if it’s right or wrong. I don’t know what the laws are regarding it. I don’t think it was an invasion of privacy, and if somebody asked him not to do it, he should have stopped. And getting the phone slapped out of your hand, that’s not a big deal. So what, you know, hey, you have a story the rest of your life to tell about it.

But I don’t think it’s a big deal, and I don’t blame CM Punk for doing that.”

The footage of the phone incident is below.
