Trish Stratus Comments on Why WWE SummerSlam Will Be Her Last Match, Charlotte Flair and More

TJR Wrestling

It is WWE SummerSlam day and one of the big matches on tonight’s show will see former Women’s Champions Trish Stratus and Charlotte Flair face off in what many people are calling a “dream match.” The reason for that label is because Charlotte has the most Women’s Titles in WWE history with nine while Stratus has seven, which was the record until Charlotte broke it earlier this year. The match will be in Trish’s hometown of Toronto, which is the same city where Trish retired as a full-time wrestler at Unforgiven in September 2006.

In an interview with our good friends at Inside the Ropes, Stratus talked about why this is the last match, why Charlotte Flair is the right opponent and more.

Why this will be her final match:

“It just feels right, the situation, all the elements. You have Charlotte Flair best of her generation, SummerSlam being the second biggest pay-per-view for WWE and it just feels right. You know, I’m getting up in age, but this is gonna be such a special moment that I don’t think you can recreate that. I feel like this is a good moment to be like ‘thank you and goodnight’ ”

What made her decide to come back and try to hang with Charlotte Flair:

“I had to dig deep and find my true reasoning, find my inner Trish Stratus if you will. I do think, I’m almost representing our era, which we like to call The Golden Era. So coming is….whether I’m proving it to the fans or proving it to my kids but really I’m proving it to myself and it’s an amazing opportunity that I couldn’t pass up. I’m looking forward to facing Charlotte Flair, who’s everything that we sort of envisioned a female performer to be so to face off with her is bringing the generations together and see where the dust settles.”

Was Charlotte Flair definitely the choice on who she wanted to have this match with:

“100 percent. She’s an amazing athlete and an incredible performer and she is the representative of the current generation. Watching her in the ring, seeing her come up, I knew her as Ric Flair’s daughter and saying ‘you’re gonna get into this’ so it’s surreal that now we’re facing off. I thrive on challenge and I’m looking forward to stepping in the ring with a performer at that level and seeing what it can bring out in me. It’s caused me to go deep and find my fire and tap into whatever I need to tap into to make this a memorable match.”

Trish also talks about her goals coming out of the bout, main eventing RAW with Lita and gives a shout out to some early 2000’s WWE females who don’t get as much recognition as Trish or Lita. Check out the full video here:
