Triple H makes a major announcement for WWE Backlash match.

This year’s Backlash event (Backlash: Tampa) will take place on May 9, 2026, at the Benchmark International Arena in Tampa, Florida.

Following this week’s episode of WWE Monday Night Raw, three matches were added to the card for the premium live event scheduled for next weekend. One of the matches booked for the show is Asuka vs. Iyo Sky.

On the April 27 edition of Monday Night RAW, Becky Lynch made an appearance to celebrate her WWE Women’s Intercontinental Championship victory over AJ Lee at WrestleMania 42. Lynch then issued an open challenge for her title, which Iyo Sky answered.

The match saw a distraction from Asuka, who tripped Sky as she prepared to deliver her Over the Moonsault finisher while the referee was distracted. This allowed Lynch to hit a second Manhandle Slam on Sky and retain her title.

Asuka And Iyo Sky Will Face Each Other at WWE Backlash

After the match, Asuka attacked Sky and locked her in the Asuka Lock until she passed out. Later in the show, WWE officially announced a match between the two former friends.

Shortly after RAW, Triple H took to social media to hype up their upcoming clash at Backlash, sharing the official match poster.

Triple H tweeted, “Two of the best. Prepare to see something special. @Iyo_SkyWWE and @WWEAsuka will face each other in less than two weeks at #WWEBacklash”

The Asuka vs. Iyo Sky rivalry began in 2025 after Sky formed an alliance and later a friendship with Rhea Ripley. Sky, who was previously close with Asuka, felt betrayed by this shift. Rhea Ripley and Kairi Sane were also involved in the storyline, although both have since moved on.

Ripley was drafted to SmackDown following her WWE Women’s Championship victory over Jade Cargill at WrestleMania 42, while Kairi Sane was released during the post-WrestleMania 42 spring roster cuts.

The Asuka vs. Iyo Sky match was originally rumored for WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas. However, it was pushed to Backlash to allow for better storytelling and due to time constraints on the WrestleMania card.
