Tony Khan has shared who came up with the idea for MJF to do a “Steiner Math” style promo on AEW Dynamite.

The AEW World Champion Maxwell Jacob Friedman (MJF) wasn’t at AEW Dynamite this week in Cincinnati, but he was featured in a video that was taped one week earlier.

Going into that episode of Dynamite, the main event was the finals of the Grand Slam Eliminator Tournament between Samoa Joe and Roderick Strong. That match saw Joe beat Strong, which meant that Joe will challenge MJF for the AEW World Title on the September 20th episode of Dynamite Grand Slam from New York City.

During MJF’s promo in the trainer’s room with best friend (and fellow ROH Tag Team Champion) Adam Cole standing by along with interviewer Renee Paquette, MJF would go on to recreate the famous “Steiner Math” promo that Scott Steiner did in TNA Wrestling.

That Scott Steiner promo took place on the May 1st, 2008 edition of Impact Wrestling with Steiner talking about a match against Samoa Joe while shouting about a bunch of different numbers as his way of explaining his chances of winning the match. It has taken on a life of its own and is one of those people that most wrestling fans know fairly well due to rewatching it many times over the last 15 years.

Since MJF was doing a promo about possibly facing Samoa Joe, it seemed like the perfect time for the AEW World Champion to recreate it.

Tony Khan says it was MJF’s idea to do the “Steiner Math” promo

In an interview with Insider, AEW CEO & GM Tony Khan revealed that it was MJF’s idea to do the Steiner-style promo.

“That particular one was him. Wrestling is all about collaborations and I really enjoy having that connection and the ability to create stories.”

“We were putting down ideas for the week’s shows, and he did say that and it was a great idea. That’s how I like to put stories together. Sit down with MJF and Adam Cole, the three of us, and talk. I’ve shot videos with the two of them and they have this great partnership.”

The lineup for AEW Dynamite Grand Slam next Wednesday, September 20 in New York City looks like this.

* AEW World Championship: MJF vs. Samoa Joe

* AEW International Championship: Jon Moxley vs. Rey Fenix

* AEW Women’s Championship: Saraya vs. Toni Storm

* Title vs. Title – ROH World Champion Claudio Castagnoli vs. NJPW Strong Openweight Champion Eddie Kingston

* Chris Jericho vs. Sammy Guevara

The Darby Allin & Sting vs. Christian Cage & Luchasaurus will be on Rampage Grand Slam rather than Dynamite next week.
