Mercedes Moné made a strong start in AEW following her return from hiatus on June 3.

Moné entered the Women’s Owen Hart Cup tournament as a wildcard by replacing Willow Nightingale, who had to not only relinquish her spot but also her TBS Championship due to an injury.

During that Dynamite taping, Mercedes Moné faced Alex Windsor, whom she defeated to secure a place in the semi-finals.

On June 17, she was involved in a hard-fought battle against Stardom’s Hazuki, who entered the semi-finals by beating Persephone in the opening round.

On multiple occasions, the former TBS Champion applied her Statement Maker submission, only for the Japanese sensation to find a way out of it.

In the closing minutes, Moné caught Hazuki with a backstabber before reapplying the submission to see the 28-year-old tap out.

The other opening match of the women’s tournament saw ROH Women’s World Champion Athena defeat Mina Shirakawa, whereas Maya World caused a massive upset by defeating the Sisters of Sin’s Julia Hart.

Athena and Maya World’s match was scheduled for Collision.

Mercedes Moné’s Women’s Owen Hart Cup Final Challenger Revealed

Following the June 17 Dynamite episode, AEW taped Collision as well, which will air on June 20. On the show, Athena was set to challenge Maya World for a place in the final of the Women’s Owen Hart Cup tournament.

In yet another shocking outcome, World defeated Athena to book her spot in the final against Mercedes Moné, with their match taking place at Forbidden Door on June 28.

The result is a massive upset, considering Athena is not only the Ring of Honor women’s champion, but a legitimate threat to the major championship in AEW as well. Nevertheless, it also sets up World’s arguably the biggest match of her wrestling career.

After the match, The CEO attacked both Athena and Maya World, giving fans a taste of what they can expect at the June 28 pay-per-view in San Jose, California.

Mercedes Moné won last year’s Owen Hart Cup tournament by defeating Jamie Hayter in the final. So, the 34-year-old knows what it takes to win in the tournament format. World, on the other hand, might look like a novice, but she has all the momentum she needs to cause another big upset.

Forbidden Door will also see the men’s tournament come to an end with Will Ospreay facing Swerve Strickland in the final. Ospreay had entered the final last year, too, losing to “Hangman” Adam Page.

On Dynamite, both he and Strickland came face-to-face, where they accused each other of altering their personalities since the last time they were in the ring together.

The segment ended with a brief brawl, which led to Strickland getting his hands on a chain, pushing Ospreay back. However, the Death Riders came to the Brit’s aid before Swerve could cause serious damage.
