Seth Rollins dropped a huge reference of a former AEW World Champion just ahead of WWE Backlash this Saturday. The star in discussion is Jon Moxley (fka Dean Ambrose).

The landscape of the WWE was completely changed after Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose, and Roman Reigns made their debut at Survivor Series 2012 as The Shield. After the faction broke up in 2014, all three members went on to become World champions in the company and were top stars for years. In 2019, Ambrose left the WWE in order to join AEW as ‘Jon Moxley’ during the company’s inception. While Roman and Seth are two of the top guys in the Stamford-based promotion, Moxley has also been a four-time World Champion in Tony Khan’s promotion.

Although it’s been years since Jon Moxley left the WWE, many fans still hold the hope that he will return as Dean Ambrose and reunite with The Shield. Earlier this year, Seth Rollins broke the silence on a potential Shield reunion, stating that he has no love lost with Roman and Ambrose is not with the Stamford-based promotion:

Well, not a lot of love lost between myself and Roman Reigns. Dean Ambrose—Jon Moxley—not currently with the company. Don’t know if he’s ever coming back. I would say the chances are very slim.”

Rollins also teased that The Shield could reunite during their Hall of Fame induction one day:

Maybe one day there will be a Hall of Fame induction where all three of us will be in the same place at the same time. I would say we’re looking at, like, maybe Kurt Angle has a better chance.”

In his recent official interview with WWE on YouTube, Seth Rollins was asked about being the one to break up The Shield back in 2014. Rollins claimed that although breaking up The Shield was a ruthless move; it was proven to be right when looking at where all of its members are right now:

I’ve said a million times why I broke up The Shield, what I think it did for the trajectory of our industry. And I think over the last decade, time has proven that, even though that was a ruthless move, it was calculated. And if you look at where everybody’s at now, I think we did alright.”

Meanwhile, Seth Rollins will be in a match against Bron Breakker this Saturday at Backlash 2026.
