Scrapped Plans For Edge’s Last WWE Match Revealed
The WWE Hall of Famer, Edge (aka Adam Copeland) was originally supposed to take on someone else in his last match in the Stamford-based promotion a few years back.
Edge is considered one of the greatest homegrown stars in WWE history. After achieving so much glory and accolades during his first run with the Stamford-based promotion, the Rated R Superstar unfortunately had to retire in 2011 due to a career-altering neck injury. He was also inducted into the Hall of Fame after that. Nonetheless, Edge made his in-ring return in 2020 after nearly 9 years of absence.
In his second WWE run, Edge continued to create moments and have amazing feuds before eventually announcing his departure in 2023. He later jumped ship to AEW and is still an active performer there. Adam Copeland’s last match in the Stamford-based promotion took place on an episode of SmackDown in Toronto in 2023 against Sheamus. However, Copeland was originally not supposed to take on Sheamus in his last match.
Sheamus revealed the original plans for Edge’s last WWE match
While Sheamus was Edge’s last opponent in the WWE, The Celtic Warrior had never faced the Rated R Superstar one-on-one before their encounter on SmackDown in 2023. During his recent interview with OTB Football, Sheamus revealed that Adam Copeland’s last WWE match was originally supposed to be Damian Priest before plans changed:
I loved it. It actually wasn’t going to happen. We pitched it and it didn’t look like it was going to come to fruition because there were a couple of other things going on. I guess, his final match was supposed to be against maybe Damian Priest. That’s what I heard. I don’t know for sure. That all changed and it ended up being me and him.”
Sheamus also recalled how he didn’t know that he was going to be Edge’s last opponent in WWE at the time:
At the time, we didn’t even realize it was going to be his last match. He was trying to figure out what he wanted to do. It was a match we never had. It was great, so easy, and so much fun. It was in Toronto, the crowd was insane. Beth Phoenix and his daughters were there. It was awesome,” The Celtic Warrior stated. [H/T Fightful]
Meanwhile, Adam Copeland continues to enjoy his AEW run, as he is currently tag-teaming with his real-life best friend, Christian Cage.
