News: WWE Adds Women’s Triple Threat Match to WrestleMania Backlash on May 16

The next WWE pay-per-view is WrestleMania Backlash on Sunday, May 16. There are only three official matches after WWE added just one match during Raw last night.

The Raw Women’s Title match was actually announced before Raw with Rhea Ripley set to defend her title against former champion Asuka.

However, during Raw last night, Charlotte Flair pleaded to WWE Official Sonya Deville to be put in the Raw Women’s Title match. Deville, who lifted Charlotte’s suspension, agreed to it while noting that the men’s match at WrestleMania Backlash is a triple threat, so the women’s match should be too. Ripley and Asuka weren’t happy about it, but the decision stands. Adam Pearce also questioned Deville about it, which continues to push their rift as management.

TJR Thoughts: It seems like this is building to Sonya Deville doing something physical to help Charlotte Flair win the title. I’m sure fans will whine about it if Ripley has a short title reign, but I just get the feeling that this is going to be used to bring back Sonya as a wrestler. Sonya could become Charlotte’s ally in the storyline. I don’t know that for sure. I’m just saying it’s possible. It will be Charlotte’s first shot at the Raw Women’s Title since June 17 of last year, yet people are already complaining about Charlotte getting a title match. I don’t mind it since she’s a good performer. It’s not like it’s a Nia Jax push going on.

That means the WrestleMania Backlash lineup looks like this right now:

WWE Championship: Bobby Lashley (c) vs. Drew McIntyre vs. Braun Strowman

Smackdown Women’s Championship: Bianca Belair (c) vs. Bayley

Raw Women’s Championship: Rhea Ripley (c) vs. Asuka vs. Charlotte Flair

The Universal Title match will probably be Roman Reigns defending the title against Cesaro, who will probably beat Seth Rollins on Smackdown this week. Other than that, there will probably be another two or three matches to fill out the card.
