What John Cena Truly Believes About WWE Roster
The WWE roster is currently undergoing major changes, says John Cena.
The WWE roster periodically changes, with some names being released and new entrants from their developmental brands, the indies, or other wrestling promotions.
But certain era-defining periods bring major changes in the roster. WWE Legend John Cena believes this is one such time.
John Cena, who was working his way up the ladder in 2005, was elevated from being the United States Champion to WWE Champion.
In a recent appearance on The Takedown on SI, Cena recalled the period between WrestleMania 20 and 21, between 2004 and 2005, when the company built stars, including himself, that would last 15-20 years.
He said that he feels the current time is similar to that particular period, with WWE pushing new stars from the developmental brand NXT.
Gosh, we have called up a whole bunch of new superstars.
The program is going through a transformation I haven’t seen since WrestleMania 20, at Madison Square Garden, and then WrestleMania goes Hollywood a year later. I think we’re in a period of transition like that, pouring the foundations for the next 15-20 years for the WWE.
John Cena Made Sure New Talent Could Shine At His Sendoff Event
John Cena’s illustrious WWE career came to a close in December last year after he wrestled his final match against Gunther at Saturday Night’s Main Event.
Cena has always believed in giving back to the business and made sure to retire in a show that could showcase some rising talent like NXT’s Sol Ruca, Je’Von Evans, and Oba Femi. At one point, he even considered having his match against Gunther first on the card to let the new stars shine.
All three stars have since debuted in the main roster.
Although he has retired from wrestling, John Cena continues to work with WWE as an ambassador.
In the same interview, Cena spoke about how retirement life has been treating him.
I wouldn’t say the end of my career is sad. I want to allow everyone to feel how they want to feel, but personally, I feel great.
As long as I’m in one piece, I have love and fulfillment in my life, it was time to close that chapter, and I really thought the last year, we went out with a bang, there were a lot of mixed opinions, but from my perspective, retirement is treating me well, so far.
