John Cena is set to host WrestleMania 42, and ahead of the event, he has dropped a cryptic message on social media that has left fans scratching their heads.

Cena retired from in-ring competition at Saturday Night’s Main Event in December 2025, following his loss to The Ring General Gunther. Just days before retiring, he signed a multi-year contract with WWE, taking on the role of the company’s brand ambassador.

Recently, Cena announced that he will serve as the official host of this year’s WrestleMania. Industry experts like Dave Meltzer have suggested that this move could be a direct response to WrestleMania 42’s lagging ticket sales.

With The Showcase of the Immortals just a week away, the 17-time World Champion recently took to Instagram to share one of his signature cryptic posts without any caption, leaving fans to interpret its meaning themselves.

In the post, Cena shared an image of a mug that read, “I’m retired, do it yourself.” While some believe the message is simply a way to build hype for his hosting duties at WrestleMania, others think it could be a subtle jab at WWE and TKO over ticket pricing issues, possibly signaling that he won’t be stepping in the ring again to save the event.

Although Cena has clearly stated that he does not intend to return to the ring, many in the WWE Universe are still clinging to hope that the Last Real Champion might compete again someday.

John Cena Will Not Compete At WWE WrestleMania 42

Former WWE employee Tommy Carlucci was recently asked on The Last Word podcast about the possibility of Cena getting physical at WrestleMania 42. Carlucci made it clear that he does not expect Cena to engage in any physical activity at the event, confidently stating that he will stick strictly to his hosting duties.

I think they brought Cena in for a reason to host, star power. Makes people wanna say, ‘Oh, I wanna go to this show. He’s hosting it. We haven’t seen him in a little bit here. What else?’ Then people start speculating, ‘Oh, is he gonna get into it here or there?’ He’s not gonna have any physicality at all. Definitely not gonna happen. [9:27 onwards]
