Major news has broken surrounding the contract status of a former NXT Champion with reports suggesting that their deal could be up after SummerSlam weekend.

Wrestling Inc. was first to report on the contract status of Adam Cole saying that The Undisputed Era star’s WWE deal was to expire in August. The report also mentioned that Cole’s deal had been extended to SummerSlam having seemingly lapsed as far back as The Great American Bash in early July. In the main event of The Great American Bash, Cole defeated his former partner O’Reilly.

Fightful Select followed up that report by saying that it was assumed within WWE that Cole’s deal actually ended in December of this year and many were surprised to find that was not the case. The report adds that those at the top of the company were only aware of the situation shortly before Cole’s contract expired and there is said to be a feeling of frustration that things got so close to the wire.

Sources within WWE have reportedly praised Adam Cole for his openness and desire to extend his deal with the company in this way although it is not known if Cole had put pen to paper on a contract or is working with a verbal agreement.

talkSPORT followed up on this by reporting that Cole had agreed to extend his deal so he could lose to Kyle O’Reilly at the upcoming NXT TakeOver: 36. The men stand at one win apiece in their rivalry that dates back to February when Cole sealed the end of The Undisputed Era with a superkick to the chin.

Adam Cole’s contract situation was the cause of heavy speculation when NXT debuted on the USA Network in 2019. Rumours had spread that Cole had inked a new deal with WWE at that point but that seemingly never happened.

Given the current climate in the wrestling world about rumours of former WWE Champions ending up elsewhere other than WWE, fans around the globe will no doubt be watching to see what Cole’s next move will be.

Adam Cole has a significant past with many of the higher-ups in All Elite Wrestling, specifically The Young Bucks. Cole and The Bucks had previously dubbed themselves The Superkliq and were all aligned with Bullet Club along with Kenny Omega. Cole’s girlfriend Dr. Britt Baker is also the reigning AEW Women’s World Champion.
