Gunther Reveals Private Talk With Triple H About Goldberg’s WWE Retirement Match
Gunther talks about his retirement match with Goldberg.
The feud ignited at WWE Bad Blood 2024, when The Ring General mocked Goldberg and his family, ultimately leading to Goldberg’s return on Monday Night Raw.
The two faced off at Saturday Night’s Main Event on July 12, 2025, which was billed as Goldberg’s retirement match. Gunther ended Goldberg’s legendary 28-year career by rendering him unconscious with a tight sleeper hold in the center of the ring.
Gunther Describes How His Match With Goldberg Came Together
Speaking on a new WWE Retrospective episode, Gunther revealed that Triple H approached him roughly a year before the match and asked whether he was interested in facing Goldberg. He immediately agreed because wrestling the WWE legend was something he wanted to do.
Gunther had admired Goldberg since his childhood; therefore, he wanted to give Goldberg the best match of his career, especially since it was his retirement bout. He added that he was pleased with how the match turned out, saying it ended up being better than he expected.
He said, “Hunter was asking me about it almost like a year before where it’s like, ‘Do you wanna do that?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, I want to. I want to wrestle Bill Goldberg and I want to have, yeah the best match that he maybe ever had.’… I think that I was very happy with that match and that definitely exceeded expectations.”
After retiring Goldberg, Gunther went on to retire two more WWE legends. He retired John Cena at Saturday Night’s Main Event in December 2025 and forced AJ Styles to hang up his boots at Royal Rumble 2026. His retirement streak has earned him the moniker of “Career Killer” in WWE.
According to rumors, Gunther is slated to retire more WWE veterans down the line. Some of the names heavily speculated to be retired by The Ring General are Randy Orton and Rey Mysterio.
