This WWE star recently opened up about not winning any major title in the company despite being one of its hottest prospects.

Fans of the WWE who watched the Ruthless Aggression Era in the 2000s will immediately recognize this star.

Chris Masters was known for being the hot young thing in WWE. His unreal bodybuilder-like physique and chiseled good looks, along with good mic skills and a unique finishing move, The Master Lock, all pointed towards Masters brewing into a big star in the company.

However, even though he was well known for his Master Lock challenge, he was never pushed above the mid-card and surprisingly never won a title during his time in the Stamford-based promotion.

He recently appeared on Chris Van Vliet’s Insight and explained why.

Ex-WWE Star Chris Masters Talks About John Cena Giving Him The Thumbs Down

Vliet asks Masters if there was ever a point when he felt he could win gold in WWE.

Masters responds, saying that there were two occasions: once, when he had the chance to win tag team gold with Carlito, and the other was a possible Intercontinental title win, both of which didn’t come about due to different reasons.

Masters reveals that the tag belts went to The Spirit Squad instead, who needed a push, and the reason behind the missed IC Title opportunity was because of his painkiller medication addiction, for which WWE had an intervention with him.

There was a point. I mean, Carlito and me were supposed to win them at that WrestleMania, but it literally got switched like the day before. We were penciled in to win it. But then Carlito, they wanted him to turn baby and The Spirit Squad, they kind of wanted to get the belts on them somehow, to give them some steam, so that was that.

Then the Intercontinental title. I was actually supposed to win that, but it was the same point where they had given me intervention for my prescription painkiller abuse at the time. They even told me, I remember having the meeting with Johnny [Ace], and because there was a four way match that night, it was in Vegas for the Intercontinental title that I was slated to win.

But then they caught wind of I had the issues I had, and I had an intervention, and basically told me you’re going to rehab. I screwed that. So tag belts, I had no control over that just happened. IC, I f’d up.

Masters then goes on to say that, although Vince McMahon had the idea of making him the youngest champion ever, John Cena gave Masters the thumbs-down, he alleges.

There was a point there, because you can even watch back to those old Raws where Vince was playing with the idea of making me the youngest champion. But, you know, he was feeling out a lot of guys at that point, you know. I’m pretty sure Cena gave me probably the thumbs down at some point.

Later in the interview, he says that although he and John Cena didn’t mix very well, calling it an “oil and water” situation, he praised Cena, calling him the Hulk Hogan of his era.
