Ex-WWE Figure Drops Sudden Cody Rhodes Bombshell: “I Hate Saying This”
A legendary figure in pro wrestling had some interesting remarks about Cody Rhodes as the Undisputed WWE Champion.
Cody Rhodes is a 3-time and current Undisputed WWE Champion, who first won the title over two years ago at WrestleMania 40.
During his three reigns as the WWE Champion, Cody Rhodes has held the title for over 626 days, putting him 10th all-time for the most days holding that version of the WWE Championship.
For over four years, Rhodes has been positioned as the top babyface in WWE, whether he’s been the champion or not. Rhodes is usually featured on SmackDown every week in a major way, whether he’s in a match or doing a promo segment.
Since he’s been so successful as a babyface for so long, there are always people clamoring for Cody Rhodes to turn heel, which is something he constantly addresses in interviews. However, there are also reports that WWE is very happy with Rhodes as a babyface because fans love him and his “American Nightmare” merchandise sells very well.
On WWE SmackDown in Bologna, Italy, an angry GUNTHER ranted about how Cody Rhodes cheated him out of the WWE Title since the referee failed to see Gunther’s foot under the bottom rope after a Cross Rhodes in their match at Clash in Italy.
Sami Zayn interrupted the Rhodes/Gunther exchange, which led to Zayn accidentally hitting a suicide dive on Zayn because Gunther moved out of the way.
Later in the show, Rhodes said he would defend the WWE Title against Gunther in two weeks on the June 19th edition of SmackDown, but it also depends on Gunther’s terms.
Cody Rhodes As A Babyface Is Tired, Says Eric Bischoff
On his 83 Weeks podcast, WWE Hall of Famer Eric Bischoff admitted that he’s “over” seeing Cody Rhodes as the babyface WWE Champion.
“I hate saying this because I really have so much respect for Cody and affection for the entire family, not just Cody. I’m over Cody as a babyface champion.
It’s not that I don’t like it. It’s just that I’ve kind of had my fill of it. There’s just not a lot of desire for me to see what the next iteration of Cody as a babyface is going to bring because we’ve been seeing it a lot for the last couple years.”
Bischoff suggests that when the WWE Title is taken off Cody, it should be what leads to Cody becoming a heel.
“I personally think that, for me, doesn’t mean I’m right for everybody else. For me, I’d get that belt off of him somehow, some way, that would begin his journey into healedom because I think there’s a lot of story, a lot of great work.
Cody’s acting, performing ability, because he’s an actor. He’s an actor. He could bring that heel character to life in a way that not too many people could because not very many people have his acting ability.”
As he made his final point, Bischoff made it clear he wants to see heel Cody Rhodes.
“I mean, he’s really good and I want to see that. That gets me excited. Babyface Cody, sorry. Been there, done that a lot. I can’t wait to see what’s next.”
