WWE is reportedly planning the in-ring return of a former world champion at SummerSlam.

Before joining the Stamford-based company three years ago, Nick Aldis wrestled in several promotions and held numerous titles, including the TNA World Championship.

However, the 39-year-old stepped away from the squared circle after becoming the SmackDown General Manager in October 2023. Aldis’ last match took place on October 7, 2023, where he competed for the ACW Bluegrass Con Title in a five-way match.

Last Saturday, the SmackDown General Manager unexpectedly brawled with Gunther backstage after Night of Champions as The Ring General accused him of being jealous of him and calling him a failed wrestler.

Last night on RAW, Michael Cole read an official announcement from WWE headquarters, revealing that both superstars were sent home following the backstage incident, with Aldis being placed on administrative leave until further investigation.

We have an update on the situation. This is an official statement from WWE headquarters. General Manager of SmackDown Nick Aldis and Gunther have been sent home because of the situation. Also Nick Aldis has been placed on administrative leave pending further investigation, so RAW General Manager Adam Pearce will run both RAW and SmackDown for the time being.

Nick Aldis Will Face Gunther At WWE SummerSlam

On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer discussed WWE’s plans for Nick Aldis following his backstage altercation with Gunther, revealing that the two stars are reportedly set to face each other at SummerSlam.

Meltzer added that Aldis’ in-ring return should be a one-off, arguing that the former TNA World Champion is unlikely to succeed as a full-time wrestler at this stage of his career.

They’re going to wrestle at SummerSlam, yeah. Aldis, I guess because he’s big, with the big shoulders and all that in the suit, there’s always been that thing like, ‘Oh, he should wrestle.’ Hopefully it’s only a one-match thing. I like him as a General Manager, and I think if they replace him, they’re probably replacing him with someone who’s not as good. If he becomes a wrestler, I don’t think he’ll be successful at this stage of the game. But for one match on a big show? Sure. [H/T: RingsideNews]
