Drew McIntyre Wants WWE To Run Event At Historic Venue

Drew McIntyre With WWE Title

Drew McIntyre wants to have a match at an iconic wrestling venue.

On the final WWE SmackDown episode before the Royal Rumble, the Undisputed WWE Champion Drew McIntyre ruined an 8-man tag team main event so that he could attack his Rumble opponent, Sami Zayn.

The match was Zayn teaming with Cody Rhodes, Randy Orton and Jey Uso facing off against The Vision’s Bron Breakker, Bronson Reed, Logan Paul and Austin Theory. Just as it looked like Zayn was about to get the win for his team, McIntyre showed up and pulled Zayn out of the ring to cause the disqualification finish.

After the match, Jacob Fatu’s music hit and he punched Drew out of the ring. Fatu hit a suicide dive on Drew on the floor. Cody hit a suicide dive on Fatu at ringside. Cody sent Fatu into the ring post. Drew sent Cody into the ring post. Drew set up a Claymore Kick, but Zayn got back into it with a Helluva Kick on Drew to knock him out of the ring.

With McIntyre out of the ring, Zayn looked at the WWE Title on the mat, and Zayn picked it up, but Cody grabbed it at the same time. Cody and Zayn turned around to see Bron Breakker back into the ring with a double Spear. That was the end of the show.

Drew McIntyre Wants To Compete At Major Japanese Venue

That SmackDown episode was in Saudi Arabia. While speaking to the Japanese website ABEMA, Drew McIntyre expressed a desire to wrestle at the Tokyo Dome in Japan.

“Japan. I’m coming back. Roppongi, wait for me. I’ve never had a big match at the Tokyo Dome, so I’d like to do it.”

The historic Tokyo Dome is where New Japan Pro Wrestling holds its Wrestle Kingdom event in early January. When WWE runs shows in Japan, they usually take place in arenas rather than at a venue like the Tokyo Dome. However, it’s certainly possible that WWE could consider using the Tokyo Dome in the future.

The WWE Royal Rumble takes place this Saturday, January 31st, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Here’s the lineup.

  • Men’s Royal Rumble Match
  • Undisputed WWE Championship: Drew McIntyre (c) vs. Sami Zayn
  • Women’s Royal Rumble Match
  • AJ Styles vs. Gunther – If Styles loses, then he must retire

The Royal Rumble streams live on Saturday, January 31, at 2 p.m. ET/11 a.m. PT, exclusively on ESPN in the United States and Netflix internationally.
