Cody Rhodes Takes First Step Towards WWE Backstage Role
Earlier this year, Cody Rhodes confirmed that his next WWE contract will be his last.
Since returning to the Stamford promotion in 2022, Rhodes has remained one of the top wrestlers. He is also the Undisputed WWE Champion on the SmackDown brand in his third reign.
Rhodes competed on last week’s taping of the blue brand, where he was confronted by the debuting Ricky Saints. The American Nightmare won the bout after hitting The Absolute One with his Cross Rhodes finisher.
Rhodes’ last title defense was during Night 1 of WrestleMania 42 against Randy Orton.
Cody Rhodes Prepares For WWE Backstage Role
Like other wrestlers of his age group, Cody Rhodes knows very well that he is closer to his retirement from in-ring competition.
The second-generation superstar, though, is not one to warm the couch in his home once he calls time on his career.
Self-admittedly, the 40-year-old WWE superstar has taken his first step into a potential backstage role in the company.
Speaking on his What Do You Wanna Talk About? podcast, Cody Rhodes claimed that he had been learning about the corporate side of the business. He admitted to recently going to the WWE headquarters to get an insight into its day-to-day operations.
So I wanted to go to the office to see what life would be like at the office at WWE HQ. I had a career before as an executive vice president. I failed at it, but I had some success along the way, learned a great deal from said failure—that’s what we need.
He also made it clear that his visit was more than just to kill time, and he treated it as if he had a job there.
I wanted to go, ‘Man, I’m gonna treat it like I’m going there for a job.’ I’ll write a sample format, I’m gonna write full tech format, times and everything. Not a dreamer one, I’ll take what we have now and put one together.
Cody Rhodes also met with the likes of Lee Fitting and Bruce Prichard, who are key figures in the daily operations of WWE.
I’m gonna go and share that with Bruce Prichard and the creative team, and I’m gonna sit with them, and I’m gonna go to CPG, meet with Lee Fitting and his team. Meet these departments—not the ‘hi, I’m such and such.’ We can do that in three minutes. I’m gonna actually know what can I really do for you? Do I fit in anywhere?
He claimed that the visit to the wrestling promotion’s HQ sparked the creative side in him. He also reached out to different people to understand what creative development meant to them.
I got the bug. I didn’t wanna be unprepared, because if you came to me as a wrestler unprepared, I’d kick back and look for things to kick back on.
So in that setting, I reached out to as many people as I could on the roster and I said, ‘What’s an idea for you? What’s something you wanna do?’ Some people called me—‘I got this.’ Some didn’t reply, some sent a nice little text with a perfect little simplified note.
Cody Rhodes finally stated that he would seriously consider taking on a backstage role if the opportunity was ever presented to him.
And I thought, okay, I’m ready if Ed or someone asked a good question. I didn’t wanna waste their time. [H/T: Ringside News]
