CM Punk has finally explained his controversial decision ahead of WWE WrestleMania 42.

Last month, Roman Reigns returned to WWE to win the 2026 Men’s Royal Rumble match. The Original Tribal Chief later confronted CM Punk on RAW, announcing that he would challenge him for the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 42.

However, The Second City Saint decided to put his title on the line ahead of the Show of Shows, going head-to-head with Finn Balor this Saturday at Elimination Chamber.

CM Punk Wants To Be A Fighting A Champion

In a recent interview with ESPN’s First Take, CM Punk was asked why he decided to defend his World Heavyweight Championship against Finn Balor at Elimination Chamber and risk losing the title ahead of WrestleMania.

The Second City Saint stated that fans deserve a fighting champion and claimed he was one. He added that since people buy tickets to see him wrestle, he intends to give them a show.

My mindset is I am a fighting champion. I’ll put it to you like this. If a franchise sports team gets into the playoffs, they don’t stop playing the regular season games, do they? No. There’s people that buy tickets, they come to see me. I’m coming to give them a show and they deserve a fighting champion. [3:19 onwards]
