For a long time after WWE acquired WCW, there was no wrestling promotion big enough to rival WWE until Tony Khan launched All Elite Wrestling (AEW) in 2019.

Since the inception of the Jacksonville-based promotion, the company has gone toe-to-toe with the Stamford-based promotion in major areas such as profits, ticket sales, TV ratings, and more. AEW is the second-biggest wrestling promotion in the world, and many consider it to be strong competition for WWE. However, WWE does not view AEW as its competition.

Road Dogg Says WWE Should Take AEW Seriously

Former WWE head writer Road Dogg recently appeared on the Busted Open podcast, where he revealed that WWE never considered AEW to be its competition. He noted that the Stamford-based promotion only views All Elite Wrestling as “this other little money mark’s company.”

Road Dogg added that this is a bad approach by the Stamford-based promotion because the Jacksonville-based promotion has been growing stronger in terms of profits and growth in the last few years.

“No, we didn’t, and we probably should have. Instead, I think it was looked at like, ‘Oh that’s this other little money mark’s company.’ I honestly think that’s how it was looked at. I would argue that, however long we are into their tenure, that was wrong to be looking at it that way. They’re still here, they’re still strong, they’re getting stronger. Adding Mike Masury was a huge step in the right direction. He’s a smart guy with good instincts.”

Road had been working in a backstage role in WWE since 2014. He left the company earlier this year, in March. While speaking on the Busted Open podcast, the legendary retired wrestler revealed why he left the Stamford-based promotion so suddenly.

He stated that there was so much work to do, and it had stopped being fun for him. Therefore, he decided to quit and focus on his personal life.
