AJ Styles’ WWE Future Uncertain After In-Ring Retirement
AJ Styles effectively retired following his loss to Gunther at the 2026 Royal Rumble.
Over the past few weeks, there has been heavy speculation surrounding Styles’ wrestling future. Styles’ WWE contract officially expires in February 2026, and fans are wondering whether he will remain with WWE, return to the ring, take on a backstage role, or potentially join another promotion.
PWInsider recently provided an update on AJ Styles’ future with the Stamford-based company. According to the report, WWE and Styles held contract discussions ahead of the Royal Rumble, but the two sides were unable to reach an agreement. As a result, WWE booked Styles to lose to Gunther as a possible farewell moment.
PWInsider also reported that contract negotiations between WWE and AJ Styles are still ongoing, with no new deal finalized at this time. If Styles’ contract were to expire, he would become a free agent and could technically join another promotion.
However, the report added that fans shouldn’t expect any immediate move, noting that Styles is not planning to return to the ring elsewhere anytime soon. Therefore, joining another promotion currently appears unlikely.
AJ Styles Will Return To The Ring, Says Matt Hardy
Speaking on the Extreme Life of Matt Hardy, TNA star Matt Hardy stated that he believes AJ Styles’ in-ring career is not over yet. He predicted AJ Styles would wrestle again, and it would be in TNA.
TNA is in a position where AJ Styles could greatly elevate the company. He would be a big deal. So, I would love to see him there… I do not think he’s done. I 100% think AJ [Styles] will wrestle again, and I feel, in my heart, that it will end up being in TNA.
