AEW’s Chris Jericho Advises Young Wrestlers On What They Need To Do
The former WWE and AEW World Champion, Chris Jericho offered valuable advice for the young, up-and-coming wrestlers.
Chris Jericho has been in the wrestling business since the year 1990. He got his big break by joining WCW in 1996 and later made his WWE debut in 1999. Y2J went on to become one of the biggest stars in the Stamford-based promotion, as he captured the World title multiple times during his tenure.
In 2019, Jericho was one of the first wrestlers to be signed by AEW during the company’s inception, and became the first-ever World Champion in the promotion as well.
Chris Jericho has been a cornerstone to AEW, and he is still signed there, helping the younger talent. Meanwhile, Jericho has some advice for the youngsters.
Chris Jericho on what the young wrestlers need to do
In a conversation with Dan Marston, Chris Jericho advised the young wrestling talent to connect with the audience while giving an example of a Moonsault from back in the 1990s:
You have to connect with the audience, and I’m not going to throw stones at the style of wrestling nowadays because when I started our style was the version of what’s going on today. The peak of athleticism in 1991 was a Moonsault. I remember the first guys to do a Moonsault in Japan was myself and Lance Storm. Now a Moonsault is the opening move.”
Jericho further stated that connecting with the audience with personality and charisma is as important as athleticism:
But that’s fine, the athleticism grows but the same principle for wrestling never changes. It’s all about your personality and about your character and about your charisma and connecting with the audience.”
Jericho concluded his message for young wrestlers, saying they have to connect with a character, otherwise they will just be guys doing spots without any reaction:
You have to connect. If not, you’re just a couple guys out there doing high spots and not getting any reactions because there’s so much going on, no one’s paying attention because nothing is special.”
There has to be a reason for what you’re doing, a reason why the match is even happening. So it’s up to all the guys and girls to figure that out for themselves. You have to find a character that’s going to connect and be a little unique that people are going to remember.” [H/T WrestleTalk]
