AEW Criticized For Adding Another Title

AEW Tony Khan

The announcement of another men’s AEW championship has left fans wondering why it’s happening at all.

During the AEW Dynamite broadcast on November 5th, the company announced a new title, the AEW National Championship. The company cited that there’s a National Title in the NWA, and they wanted to do it too, even though AEW has no actual affiliation with the NWA.

At AEW Full Gear on November 22nd, there will be a Casino Gauntlet Match that can end at any time, and the number of wrestlers in the match isn’t known before the match.

Here’s a listing of current men’s championships in AEW.

* World Championship held by “Hangman” Adam Page

* TNT Championship held by Kyle Fletcher

* Unified Championship held by Kazuchika Okada, which also includes the Continental Championship and International Championship, both of which apparently still exist even though they are not defended.

* World Tag Team Championships held by Brodido – Brody King & Bandido

* World Trios Championships held by The Opps – Samoa Joe, Powerhouse Hobbs & Katsuyori Shibata

The AEW National Championship will be added to all of those titles.

AEW Fans Likely Don’t Even Want A New Championship

On Wrestling Observer Live, Bryan Alvarez and co-host Tom Lawlor discussed the new AEW National Title and why it’s really not needed.

Alvarez: “Here’s the thing. When this was announced yesterday, was there anybody that was like thank God we’re getting a new title? Was there one person anywhere, even hardcore AEW fans, does anybody got thank God we got a new belt?”

Lawlor: “Probably some of the lower tier roster members.”

Alvarez: “Was there any fan clamoring for a new belt? The answer is no.”

Lawler: “Yes (laughs). Some of the lower tier roster members.”

Alvarez: “Now from what I saw yesterday, and this is from AEW fans, so don’t get mad at me. This is from AEW fans. I saw two reactions to this title yesterday. Okay? The first one was people said when I saw this I thought it was a meme. I thought it was a joke. They actually thought like it was some silly thing like there really wasn’t going to be another title.

And then, like, the real hardcores, the best I saw from the real hardcores was people that went, I mean, it doesn’t bother me. That’s your reaction. It doesn’t bother you. That means you don’t care. That means we’re adding another title that you don’t care about.

We don’t need another title that you don’t care about.”
